Rockies players leave for WBC
Five Rockies players left Sunday to join their WBC teams.
Catcher Chris Iannetta is on the United states team, right-handed pitcher Jason Grilli will pitch for Italy, right-handed pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez will pitch for the Dominican Republic, left-handed pitcher Adam Bright will pitch for Australia, and right-handed pitcher Manny Corpas will pitch for Panama. Corpas is the only who pitched in the previous WBC.
Outfielder Brad Hawpe was supposed to play for the United States, but a hand injury on Saturday sidelined him.
“Disappointed?” he said, repeating the question. “No. I would have liked to have played, but how can you be disappointed when you are in a big league camp?”
The Rockies play the Mexican team in an exhibition game on Thursday. The Mexican team is managed by Rockies special assistant Vinny Castilla, who was unable to convince left-handed pitcher Jorge De La Rosa and infielder Omar Quintanilla to play in the WBC. Marcel Lacehmann, also a special assistant for the Rockies, is pitching coach for the United Sates team.
Mexico will work out in Tucson in preparation for the tournament.
