Turning point: Staked to a three-run lead in the first, Franklin Morales allowed one run in each of the first two innings but picked off two runners at first base. He put up two zeroes to finish his four-inning outing with four hits allowed and two walks while avoiding a bad misstep in his bid to make the rotation.

Big day: Ian Stewart hit a three-run homer in the first off John Lackey and went 2-for-5 with four RBI. In five spring games, Stewart is 4-for-13 (.308) with five RBI.

Bad day: Actually it wasn’t as bad as some earlier ones this spring for Jason Hirsh, but he didn’t steam forward in his attempt to land a spot in the rotation. Hirsh allowed three hits and two runs, one unearned because of his throwing error in a rundown, in two innings but didn’t walk anyone and struck out two. In four spring games, Hirsh has a 12.19 ERA, allowing 22 hits and 15 runs, 14 earned, in 10 1/3 innings with eight walks and four strikeouts.

FYI: Dan Ortmeier hit a solo homer in the fifth off former Rockies reliever Justin Speier and went 2-for-4 to raise his average to .333 (8-for-24) with two doubles and two homers . . . Carlos Gonzalez went hitless in three at-bats with a walk, dropping his average to .150 (3-for-20) . . . Scott Podsednik went 1-for-2 with three walks and two runs scored. He stole his third base, tying Eric Young Jr. for the team lead, and was caught for the second time . . . Clint Barmes went 2-for-4 with one RBI and raised his average to .375 (9-for-24) . . . Christian Colonel and Dexter Fowler have each played in a team-high 12 games.
