Jeff Baker, out since the second game of the spring with right elbow problems, will return to the lineup today. He will start at third base.
Garrett Atkins, meanwhile, remains sidelined with a hip flexor strain. With the team off on Wednesday, manager Clint Hurdle said it won’t even be a consideration to play Atkins on Tuesday.
Left-hander Greg Smith, out nearly two weeks with the flu, will return to the mound on Wednesday in a minor-league game. He is still a fifth starter candidate, but cannot afford to miss any more time.
