Fogg Sent to Minor League Camp

Right-handed pitcher Josh Fogg, a key member of the Rockies rotation in 2006 and 2007, was reassigned to the minor-league camp on Monday.

With the move the Rockies have 33 players remaining on their spring training roster, including seven non-roster invitees.

Earlier Monday they optioned outfielders Carlos Gonzalez and Matt Murton, and left-handed pitcher Greg Smith to Triple-A Colorado Springs, and reassigned catchers Edwin Bellorin and Paul Phillips, and left-handed pitcher Randy Flores to the minor-league camp.

Fogg was a late addition to the spring roster, as much out of respect for his clubhouse presence as anything. He was a longshot in both the rotation and bullpen races, and the decision was made Monday to send him to Colorado Springs so he can continue to make progress.

“He is working his way back to the good place we have seen before, but he is not quite there right now,” said manager Clint Hurdle.

Fogg did work a 1-2-3 inning in relief in Monday’s 10-3 victory against Arizona. It lowered his spring earned-run average to 7.20.

Fogg spent last season with Cincinnati, signing a $1.5 million contract after spring training began. He later said he had been unaware that the Rockies had discussed with his representatives the possiblity of a $5 million deal to return to Colorado, although a formal offer was never made.

With the move of Fogg, the final decision the Rockies face with their pitching staff involves whether to keep Juan Morrillo or Matt Belisle for the final bullpen spot.

The Rockies could keep both of them temporarily, sending out left-hander Franklin Morales, who will be the fifth starter and won’t have to start before April 21.

As much as I was stunned about Murton, the move with Fogg does not surprise me at all.

Would they lose Belisle if he is not kept or can he be sent down to AAA? I have heard Morillo is out of options, so he would be put on waivers and most likely claimed. W/ that arm I am hoping the Rox stick w/ Morillo and give him a shot I think he deserves.

    Zack,
Like Fogg, Belisle has an opt out in his contract only if he is placed on a team’s Opening Day roster. Of course, given the way Belisle has pitched that could happen.
You are correct, Morillo is out of options and would have to clear waivers to be sent to the minors.
