Murton Impressed

Outfielder Matt Murton was optioned to the minor leagues on Monday, even though he hit .302 in 22 games. Manager Clint Hurdle said Murton made a strong impression, but for now it appears the Rockies will go with Dan Ortmeier instead as a right-handed outfield alterantive.

Ortmeier also can play first base and is a switch-hitter, although he has struggled enough left-handed he did not hit from that side last season.

“He had a good camp and is in a good place,” Hurdle said of Murton. “I like the way he stepped up. There is no doubt, I believe, he will be back in (a Rockies) uniform this year.”

I hope that Murton will be able to be called up this year, if not, what a waste. I suppose with the way things unfolded with Atkins having injury problems, Ortmeier would be the better choice at this point. I’m thinking it might have been different if not for that.

Tracy, we’ve always enjoyed reading your work. Will you be traveling with the Rockies this year, i hope?

Don, thanks for the kind words. I’ll be traveling a good part of the time. The schedule has me doing 108 FSN Rocky Mountain pregame and post-game shows, minimum, with the possiblity of more, and I’ll be around on other days just because I can’t stay away.
