Seth Smith, the expected Opening Day left fielder for the Rockies, will rejoin the team in Las Vegas on Friday. Smith was given permission to fly home to Mississippi on Monday night to be with his wife for the birth of the couple’s first child on Wednesday.

“This is something we have been aware of and have worked around,” said manager Clint Hurdle. “This is no surprise.”

Smith has hit .300 in 16 games this spring with six doubles, two triples, a home run and eight RBI.

THE ROCKIES had an attendance of 72,934 for their 16 games at Hi Corbett Field this spring. It’s their largest ticket sales since they sold 80,824 in 1998.

THE ROCKIES finish the Arizona part of their schedule with games against the Chicago White Sox at Glendale on Tuesday, Kansas City at Surprise on Wednesday and Arizona at Tucson Electric Park on Thursday. They play Seattle in Las Vegas on Friday night and Saturday afternoon. Both games in Las Vegas will be televised by FSN Rocky Mountain.

Interesting stat regarding spring training attendance. What affect will the economy have on the Rockies attendance at Coors field this season?

    Tracy,
Did the attendance really spike towards the end of spring? I was down there around the middle of March, the same time that I was there last year, and it seemed about 1/2 as full this time around. Maybe I just perceived it that way.
Regardless, if you are reading this and have not attended spring training…do yourself a favor and make your way down there next year and bring your kids, it is a one of a kind experience. You will not regret the cheap weekend trip.

David, I do think attendance was up a bit, to be honest. Rockies have never been a strong draw in Tucson since the White Sox and Diamondbacks joined the Tucson scene. If you notice, the first year of the three teams was the last time the Rockies drew more. I’m sure the absence of the Sox was a factor because it meant that the days the Rockies played at home they were the only show in town. In the last decade, there was always a game at TEP whenever the Rockies played.

Kris, I think the economy will have some impact but the key for Rockies attendance will be performance on the field. Season tickets and presales are down, but game day tickets will pick up if the Rockies compete in the NL West.
