Score _ Royals 6, Rockies 5 at Surprise
Turning point _ Matt Belisle, working his second inning, gave up back-to-back homers to Jose Guillen and Alex Gordon in the fifth, which gave the Royals a 5-1 lead.
Big day _ Dexter Fowler went 3-for-5 with a double, triple, two runs scored, one RBI and one strikeout. He was also caught stealing for the third time this spring.
Bad day _ Making his final start of the spring before Opening Day on Monday when he faces the Diamondbacks, Aaron Cook allowed seven hits and three runs in three innings with one walk and one strikeout. The damage included two doubles and solo homers by Billy Butler in the second and Mark Teahan in the third. Teahan’s homer was his seventh of the spring.
FYI _ Juan Morillo walked two and struck out one while not allowing a hit in a scoreless sixth. Morillo has allowed at least one walk in his past four games and five of his past six. His spring totals include 10 walks and 11 strikeouts in 13 2/3 innings…In his previous six Cactus League starts, Cook had allowed one homer in 24 2/3 innings…Belisle had yielded one run in 8 1/3 innings in his previous seven Cactus League games…Troy Tulowitzki went 2-for-3 with a double, two walks and two RBI. He had three walks in his first 15 Cactus League games…Minor league left-hander Kurt Birkins gave up a solo homer to Brayan Pena in the eighth that proved to be the difference in the game. Birkins, 28, pitched for the Orioles in 2006 and 2007 and the Rays briefly last year and is 6-4 with a 5.85 ERA in 60 big league appearances, including two starts.

hmmm…. I wonder if Fowler will start the opener? I like the Spilly (lf)/Dex (cf)/Hawpe (rf) combo. Of course, I’m perfectly happy with Smith in there too… Of course, since we’re facing the rh Webb, it will prolly be Smith/Spilly/Hawpe. Can’t wait for Monday!!
Funny, I wouldn’t have expected at the beginning of the Spring that the outfielder I would be most concerned about was Hawpe! It seems like the other three are ready and chomping at the bit!
