Recap: Rockies 6, Mariners 5
Saturday, April 4
Score _ Rockies 6, Mariners 5 at Las Vegas
Turning point _ Seth Smith’s first-pitch single off Sean White with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth won the game. Singles by Yorvit Torrealba and Dexter Fowler and Omar Quintanilla’s walk set the stage for Smith, who went 2-for-2 with an RBI and one walk.
Big day _ Torrealba went 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored and threw out one of two runners trying to steal.
Bad day _ Juan Morillo had a 24-pitch seventh inning and was charged with a blown save when he allowed an unearned run that resulted after an error by second baseman Ian Stewart on a ball hit by the first batter Morillo faced. But Morillo committed a balk, gave up a run-scoring single, had a runner erased trying to steal and gave up another single, threw a wild pitch and issued another walk before getting the final out of the inning.
FYI _ The Rockies finished exhibition play with a record of 17-17-1…Winning pitcher Manuel Corpas threw seven of nine pitches for strikes in the ninth and lowered his spring ERA to 0.82…Jason Marquis gave up 10 hits, including solo homers by Kenji Johjima and Yuniesky Betancourt, and four runs in six innings but had no walks and seven strikeouts. In his final start before the home opener Friday at Coors Field against the world champion Phillies, Marquis threw 89 pitches, 68 for strikes.
