At this point, would this be more of an insurance type of acquisition? Gaudin has a career ERA of 4.58, and the last two years have been 5+. So, if Gaudin wants to start there shouldn't be anyone on the roster now in jeapordy of losing their spot in the rotation. A few months ago, I would have said De la Rosa, but he's been reasonably dependable; winning 7 in a row before the last game.

Coming down the stretch, it will be nice to have someone waiting in the wings who has big league experience. Gaudin also has a decent ERA at Coors, so he knows how to pitch at altitude. What do we have to lose?

Matt, interesting point. First, however, remember Morales is the only young starter so it's not that there are a series of starters. More than that, however, consider that over the course of the season, due to injuries or whatever, most teams use at least 10 different starting pitchers. Last year, as has been pointed out, that became a problem for the Rockies because they were so lacking in depth. I don't see any of the starters that are added at Triple-A as being ones who will force their way onto the big league roster, except Morales. The others are being kept in shape and ready to go in case a need arsies.

Matt

Interesting perspective but I respectfully disagree

If you are fringe starter in the majors you should be scared. Throw strikes and get guys out and there is nothing to worry about.
AAA is the place to practice working out of jams and gaining confidence - not up here where the difference between post season and a vacation will probably be a couple of games

Pitching, and Depth are two good words to have in the same sentence. Gaudin was involved in the Rich Harden deal from Oakland if I am not mistaken...He is no Greg Maddux, but he is good, and if we can get him for the minimum...why not??

My worry is that by having 8 guys competing for 2 spots is that the coaches will feel more inclined to switch at the first sign of trouble. This doesn't bode well for the younger pitchers who need to learn how to work their way out of trouble consistently over a bunch of starts. I think that for younger guys, it helps having the confidence from you pitching coach that just because you had a couple bad games, you won't be sent down to AAA.

It also seems to help the overall defense if there are only a handful of pitchers you know will be starting. Tulo and Barmes/Stewie/Baker probably know a bit better where pitches will end up, or balls in play, coming from Cook and Jimenez than Smith, Hirsch and Belisle.

I agree with the others that you cannot have too much pitching. We wasted FAR too many starts on the likes of Redman and de los Santos last year. To me, that in itself showed that the front office wasn't as serious about winning last year. There are far better options this year. Some may pan out, some won't, but the competition will keep all of them focused.

While I agree it is nice to have several pitchers available during the season, I wonder if the Rockies are closed to being overloaded? Especially, with guys who aren't necessarily great pitchers. After Cook/Jiminez/Marquis, I count the following as #4 or #5 candidates: DLR, Morales, Smith, Hirsch, Reynolds, Hammell, Fogg, Rusch, Belisle, etc. I know Rusch and Belisle are currently relievers, but they can start if needed. This does not include Hynick and Jhoulys who could both be available later in 2009.

It sure is nice to see the Rockies have the "problem" of a glut of pitchers. All too often during the years it has been lack of pitching that has been the Rockies biggest problem. The team looks strong in the early going - keep it up, guys!

Marc, the addition of Guadin would come with no promises, other than I am sure an out clause if he isn't promoted to the big leagues. What Reynolds, Hirsch and Co.,, need to focus on is getting their own games in order. If they do they will be in line to come up. As for De La Rosa, if he pitches like he did at the end of next season there is nobody who will take his job away from him. Gaudin just adds to the inventory and competition.

Tracy -

Lots of activity on the pitching front.
Does the addition of Hammel and possibly Gaudin put Jorge in the spotlight?
Also - I suppose this makes for an even steeper uphill climb for Reynolds, Smith and Hirsch.

If you haven't left ...have a safe trip back
