Speier placed on disabled list

Reliever Ryan Speier was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring by the Rockies, who had to make a move to open a spot on the roster for tonight’s starter Franklin Morales.

Speier is 0-0 with a 4.76 ERA in five games and has allowed six hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings with two strikeouts. He has been scored upon in his past two appearances.

Speier last pitched Saturday at Los Angeles, which means he’ll go on the disabled list retroactive to Sunday and will be eligible to be activated May 4. In Saturday’s game, Speier worked two innings and allowed two hits, one run and one walk. He has retired just one of the five first batters he has faced and has allowed the four runners he has inherited to score.

Managfer Clint Hurdle said the hamstring began to bother Speier during the spring and he attempted to pitch through the problem.

“He said everyone gets through when they are banged up, but we need to get this revolved and get him better,” said Hurdle.

Hurdle said a concern is in favoring the hamstring problem Speier could create an arm injury.

With the move, Matt Belisle remained on the Rockies roster. Hurdle said he will look for some situations to get Belisle work to see if he can clean up problems from his recent appearances.

Does that mean Belisle is still on the roster?!?!

Joseph, You are correct. He’s still on the roster.

What will his role be? He’s struggled mightily all year.

On the active roster, no less.

Well, it’s early yet. His major/minor lg numbers are not impressive beyond his walk rates, but maybe the Rockies saw something.

It also reminds me that we’ve been lucky, the Rockies have had pretty decent bullpens the last few years–no real weak link. That’s an achievement.
