TURNING POINT

With one out and runners on first and second in the seventh and the game scoreless, pinch hitter Ryan Roberts singled home a run against Jorge De La Rosa. Center fielder Ryan Spilborghs overthrew the cutoff man, trying unsuccessfully to nail Chris Snyder at third base. Roberts took second on the throw, setting up an intentional walk to Felipe Lopez to load the bases. After Stephen Drew struck out, Jason Grilli walked Conor Jackson to force in a second run.

AT THE PLATE The Rockies had nine hits, all singles and four by Ryan Spilborghs. …The only extra-base hit of the game was a double in the second by Eric Byrnes. …Brad Hawpe had two hits, the first a leadoff bunt in the second. …Singles in the fourth and ninth gave Seth Smith his first multi-hit game of the season.

ON THE MOUND

Dan Haren entered the game 0-3 with a 1.89 ERA. He pitched seven scoreless innings, lowered his ERA to 1.38 but never retired the Rockies in order. They went 0-for-8 against Haren with runners in scoring position and 0-for-9 overall. …Jorge De La Rosa matched Haren until the Diamondbacks broke through in the seventh and allowed six hits and two runs in 6 2/3 innings with four walks and six strikeouts. He worked out of a jam in the sixth, getting Chad Tracy to ground into an inning-ending double play with runners on first and third. …Closer Chad Qualls gave up two singles in the ninth but ended the game by getting Clint Barmes to ground to third baseman Augie Ojeda, who forced Seth Smith at third.

NUMBERS GAME

2 shutout losses for the Rockies in 14 games this season. They began the road trip that just ended with a 4-0 loss to the Cubs on April 13 at Wrigley Field in Chicago’s home opener.

    Gentleman –

Can you give a brief overview of how Jorge looked today?
Appears his stikes/balls was almost 50/50 but his line looks like he led it together nicley.
    As always, thanks for everything.

Marc, with De La Rosa the strike-ball ratio isn’t going to be eye opening, but the key is he was able to pitch out of the jam or two he faced the first six innings, and even in the seventh wasn’t really hit hard. He was solid. What you have to remember with De La Rosa is that out pitch, that hard slider, is a swing and miss pitch. He rarely throws it for a strike. He also will go for that perfect pitch when he gets ahead in the count, which will draw out his pitch count. De La Rosa has made major steps in the last year, and if he can continue to address issues he will really be intriguing.
