Hammel moves into rortation in place of injured Franklin Morales. Hammel made five starts for Tampa Bay last April but finished season in bullpen. This will be his second career start against Padres. He allowed three runs in 6 2/3 innings of a 2007 no-decision for Rays.

Hammel’s headache: Kevin Kouzmanoff was 1-for-3 against Hammel with a double, the only one of  four Padres to face Hammel who has a hit off him.

Hammel’s relief: Adrian Gonzalez is not only 0-for-3 agaisnt Hammel, but he has struck out twice.

Young is coming off a no-decision at San Francisco on Wednesday in which he worked seven shutout innings in what became a 1-0 Padres loss. He allowed seven runs in 3 2/3 innings at Philadelphia in another no decision his previous start. He is 5-1 with a 3.28 earned-run-average in 11 career starts against the Rockies, including 3-1 with a 4.20 ERA in six starts at Coors Field.

Young’s headache: Ryan Spilborghs is hitting .375 in 11 at-bats. Garrett Atkins is 7-for-25 but with three home runs and three walks.
