Outfielder Matt Murton was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs, taking the roster spot of infielder Jeff Baker, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left hand.

Baker was placed on the disabled list retroactive to Monday and is eligible to activated May 12. In 12 games, the last of which was Sunday, he is 3-for-23 (.130) with three RBI on a bases-loaded triple in the fifth Sunday against the Dodgers.

Murton, 27, was acquired Feb. 4 from the A’s for infielder Corey Wimberly. At Colorado Springs, Murton was hitting .411 (30-for-73) with six doubles, four home runs and 19 RBI. He also had eight walks and just four strikeouts.

Murton is third in the Pacific Coast League in batting average, tied for second in hits, second in on-base percentage (.476), third in slugging percentage (.658) and tied for second in runs scored (18).

Murton made his Rockies debut in the seventh. He pinch hit for starting pitcher Aaron Cook and struck out against Luis Perdomo.

Baker injured his hand in the seventh inning Sunday when he struck out on his final at-bat. He had hoped to be ready Friday when the Rockies play at San Francisco and avoid the disabled list, but the Rockies medical staff felt otherwise.

    About time!

Murton was mashing at AAA and Baker…well Baker was both scuffling and redundant.

Interesting move, though I’m not sure how much of an opportunity this will be for Murton given the logjam at the corner OF spots.

Are there not any pitchers that can be called up to help? Especially a closer! Neither Street nor Corpas are getting it done. 0-5 in one run games with how many runs given up in the eighth and ninth innings? Teams don’t appear to fear nor respect the Rockies pitching, believing they can get by the occasional good games by Cook or Jemenez and smile when they get to our bullpen.

I’m excited to see what Murton can do. It was a surprise to me that he didn’t make the club in the spring.

Murton had the option though to be sent down. Will be interesting if they give Murton a start or gets some hits off the bench what they will do come the 12th though. I have like Baker, but it seems he is always getting hurt. Too bad, might be the end of his time here soon if Murton performs.

I’m happy to see Murton called up from AAA. I hope he gets an opportunity to show his stuff!

Yes! Murton has been freed! But, how much playing time will he get other than being a PH? It’s good to see him get this opportunity though, he’s earned it.
