Right-handed pitcher Shawn Chacon, who grew up in Greeley and was an All-Star with the Rockies, is trying to revive his career.

Chacon, released by Houston after an altercation with general manager Ed Wade in the player’s lounge at Minute Maid Park, is joining the Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League. Tim Raines is manager of the team and Mike Torres is the pitching coach.

Meanwhile, the independent Tucson Toros have signed shortstop Franklin Gonzalez, the nephew of Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba. Tim Johnson is managing the Toros.
