Class, Arizona Style

Word out of Arizona is that Bob Melvin was told he was to manage two games after being told he was fired — at San Diego last Wednesday and Thursday.

He also was told not to let anybody know he had been fired or his contract could be voided.

Then, when the Diamondbacks were on the team bus on the way to the airport after Thursday’s game, Arizona officials leaked the information about the firing to the media, making sure Melvin wouldn’t be available to address media questions.

Apparently the relationship between Melvin and the front office or ownership deteriorated? Kudos to Melvin for doing the last two games and going out with his head up seemingly. Can’t say the same thing about the owners and front office in Arizona based on this.

Glad Monfort came out in public and showed support for Hurdle. Way to take a stand. As a fan I appreciate a person standing up and not hiding like others in the west, aka Manny Ramirez or Arizona. I can’t speak for the players or Hurdle, but for one game last night, that looked like a pretty good solid team out there that was relieved and played well.

I can’t say I am suprised by Melvin managing two games after being fired. He is a class act and should be in a dugout next season. good luck to you Bob

    Tracy,

Josh Byrnes worked for the Rockies. Is that the kind of guy he was/is? Was this a straight from the top kinda thing?

    That seems really odd.

I believe Byrnes was blamed for the non-trade with the Red Sox where the Rockies ended up with Larry Bigbie (they only acquired him because they had assurance on a subsequent deal where they’d send Bigbie to the Sox). Though many believe Larry Lucchino used Byrnes (then assistant GM) as a scapegoat.

Though that’s another story where Tracy or Jack might have more info.

I will not say I am real close to Josh. After he went to Boston, he called me on Opening Night in the seventh inning of a game in Houston the next year to rant that he had to leave Colorado because I wouldn’t promote him to get a GM job. He said in Boston the writers, like Peter Gammons, would promote him. I told him I didn’t think that was my job. He didn’t seem too happy with the answer.
And yes he supposedly agreed to the deal, which prompted the Rockies to trade for Larry Bigbie so they could then send him to Boston as part of the package, and then Boston backed out of the deal, although the reasons why have changed from time to time, depending on which Red Sox official is telling the story. I will leave it at that.
