Smith Strong in SkySox Start

Left-handed pitcher Greg Smith made a strong first impression with Triple-A Colorado Springs on Sunday.

Smith, coming back from a spring bout with the flu and weakness in his left triceps, moved up to the SkySox after two starts for Hi-A Modesto, and allowed one hit in five innings of a 4-0 victory against Houston’s Triple-A Round Rock affiliate.

Smith walked one and struck out three. He also singled and scored to lead off a three-run third inning at Round Rock.

Smith will start again for the SkySox next weekend after which his status will be re-evaluated.

The way Hammel is pitching right now..I say leave Smith down just to be sure he is ready.

What about Morales? Will he be back?

    Morales will be back soon

    Morales > Smith > Hammel

If Morales could ever get healthy and sustain it, I think he would make a strong number three >POSSIBLY< number two starter.

Morales may begin his rehab this weekend, if his Tuesday simulated game goes well (I see no reason it shouldn’t). If both DLR and Hammel pitch very well during his rehab, they may choose to keep Morales in the minors for now. Our starting pitching has been our strongest area lately, and there’s no reason to fix what isn’t broken. I think Smith is staying down anyway until we have a reason to bring him up. If Hammel (or DLR) struggles, Morales probably displaces them in the rotation and they become a long reliever.
