Torrealba Heads Home

Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba flew home to Venezuela to deal with personal matters on Tuesday. Edwin Bellorin was called up from Triple-A Colorado Springs to take Torrealba’s spot.

Torrealba was placed on the restricted list, opening spots for Bellorin on both the 40-man roster and the 25-man active roster.

Bellorin will share catching duties with Paul Phillips, who joined the team May 24 when Chris Iannetta was placed on the disabled list.

Bellorin, Phillips and Sal Fasano have been sharing the catching duties at Triple-A Colorado Springs. Fasano was the likely call up on Tuesday, but he has been battling back problems.

There was no word on how long Torrealba will be gone. The Rockies are optimistic that Iannetta, battling a strained hamstring, will join the team on June 9 when they open a three-game series at Milwaukee.

Who was taken off the 40-man roster to add Bellorin?

It would sure be nice to see Danny Ardoin back in the Rockies system.

Danny Ardoin is now playing for the Albuquerque Isotopes, the AAA affiliate of the Dodgers. He’s doing a nice job and has fit in well with an old (for AAA) ballclub. There were 14 players over the age of 30 with the “Topes when the season started.

Wow, it must be something for this to happen with Iannetta out. I hope Torrealba’s people are ok.

Ardoin was one of the fun parts of that team. He can’t hit, and the team wasn’t going anywhere, but that guy was fun to watch catch and throw.

Hmm. MLB.com updated the 40-man to reflect Bellorin, but Torrealba’s still on it, and there are now 44 members (3 60-day DL’ers), assuming I counted right.

Is Torrealba on the restricted list?

Torrealba was indeed placed on the restricted list.
