Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba’s nightmare ended on Wednesday.

Torrealba left the Rockies earlier this week because his son and two of his uncles, who were driving the boy to school, were kidnapped. Venezuela officials announced on Tuesday night that the children were recovered.

De Todo en Diversiones has the story in spanish:

Torrealba

A translated version:

The son of Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba was resuced Wednesday night in the Venezuelan city of Araira.

The 11-year-old child and two of his uncles were kidnapped Tuesday morning in Guarenas when he was on his way to school.

The rescue of the three was a joint effort of the Anti-Extortion and Kidnapping Unit of Venezuela’s Investigative Police, combined with policemen from Guarenas and Higuerote.

Investigative Police Director Wilmer Flores said the kidnappers were pressured by the police’s action. They abandoned the child and his uncles on Araira’s main highway, and ran away.

Venezuela officials said they have the identity of the kidnappers.

Director Flores Trosel said the kidnappers asked for a approximatley $1 million ransom, but it was not paid.

The Rockies were asked by law enforcement officials to not announce the reason for Torrealba’s departure, and merely said he returned home to Venezuela for personal reasons. Club officials welcomed the news that the child was safely returned.

“Our organization is relieved that the situation was resolved with the safe return of Yorvit’s family members and we will continue to support Yorvit and his family through what has been an extremely emotional situation,” said Rockies President Keli McGregor. “Yorvit knows that he can take the time he needs and will rejoin the Club when the time is right.”

If I’m not mistaken, this is a real serious issue for a lot of professional big league player’s. Definitely scary and definitely a down side to being in the spotlight.
