Reliever Taylor Buchholz will undergo Tommy John surgery Wednesday morning in Denver. Dr. Thomas Noonan, the Rockies medical director, will perform the ligament transplant surgery on Buchholz’s right elbow that will sideline him for at least one year.

In other news, left-hander Greg Smith threw 60 pitches in a simulated game Tuesday at Coors Field. Smith was fatigued at the end but had no pain in his left shoulder, trainer Keith Dugger said . Smith has made three starts this season, the last on May 24 for Triple-A Colorado Springs, as he works his way back from left shoulder inflammation.

Dugger said he didn’t know yet what the next step would be for Smith.

Reliever Ryan Speier threw a 32-pitch bullpen session Monday and is scheduled to throw again in the bullpen Wednesday. Speier was nearing the end of a 30-day rehab assignment when he developed soreness in his right shoulder.

He made three appearances each for high Class A Modesto and Double-A Tulsa and four for Colorado Springs, the last on June 1.
