Recap: Rays 12, Rockies 4

Turning point:The Rockies’ winning streak landed with a thud in foul ground behind third base. In the second inning with the Rays up 1-0 and runners at first and second, Gabe Kapler hit a foul pop behind Ian Stewart, who was tracking the ball but suddenly stopped, apparently expecting Troy Tulowitzki to cross in front of him to make the catch. But Tulowitzki was on the other side of Stewart, and the ball dropped untouched to give Kapler another shot. On the next pitch from Jorge De La Rosa, Kapler tripled to left-center scoring two runs and giving the Rays a 3-0 lead on their way to a rout of the Rockies.

At the plate:Clint Barmes and Brad Hawpe each had two hits for the Rockies . . . Dexter Fowler was 1-for-4 and drove in two of the Rockies’ four runs . . . The Rays pounded 17 hits, including a team-record 11 extra-base hits and five home runs . . . Ben Zobrist, B.J. Upton and Gabe Kapler each had three hits for the Rays.

On the mound:After two solid starts, Jorge De La Rosa had his shortest outing of the season, lasting just 2 1/3 innings. He allowed seven runs on eight hits and a walk . . . The bullpen had its first extended workout in nearly two weeks. Josh Fogg pitched 3 1/3 innings . . . Randy Flores and Matt Daley each allowed two runs . . . Alan Embree, who pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning, was the only Rockies pitcher in the game to not allow a run . . . Jeff Niemann pitched just five innings for the Rays, allowing three runs, but stuck around long enough for his sixth win.

Fans booed DLR when Tracy pulled him. I thought that was pretty bush league.

Well, I guess we know who Ian Snell would be replacing in the rotation.

Seriously … DLR had really good stuff tonight. This is why he drives pitching coaches nuts. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: he’s the Mexican Jeremy Affeldt. And just like Affeldt, I still think his future (and I do think he has a future, even though he’s no kid anymore) is in the bullpen.

    Agbayani,
Who is Ian Snell, and where did he come from? I read here every day & I haven’t heard that name before now.

I agree about DLR going to the pen. Too inconsistent for the rotation.

Figmon, Ian Snell is a pitcher for the Bucs. There’s a blurb in today Denver Post about the Rocks talking to the Pirates regarding a trade. If I recall, it would be a swap of Atkins for Snell. Probably a small chance of it happening, but you just never know…

Trip, I think the teams would have to discuss a deal before it could be made. I think there are people in Rockies organization who have had Snell and do not welcome a reunion.

Thanks Tracy. I was pretty dubious of that
