Corpas Sidelined by Inflamation

Rockies right-hander Manny Corpas woke up Friday with right elbow soreness, the latest blow to the Rockies revolving relief corps.
Corpas was examined by team doctors in the afternoon because of the inflammation.

Rockies manager Jim Tracy said an MRI showed a floating bone chip in the elbow. Corpas was given a cortisone shot in hopes it will alleviate the inflamation and allow Corpas to pitch. It that doesn’t work it is likely Corpas would require surgery.

Lefty Greg Smith, meanwhile, will begin a minor-league rehab assignment at Double-A Tulsa on Monday. He will be on a 60-pitch limit. Smith, out with left biceps fatigue, will start for Tulsa again on June 28, working on a 70-pitch limit, and then be moved to Triple-A Colorado Springs. He will be on an 80-pitch limit in a July 5 start for the SkySox, and then is expected to work every fifth day after that for the remainder of his 30-day rehab assignment.

Catcher Yorvit Torrealba is expected to begin his five-game minor-league assignment with Colorado Springs in Sacramento on Monday. He could join the big-league team in Oakland next weekend, along with Jeff Baker, who began a rehab assignment at Hi-A Modesto Friday and will move to Colorado Springs next week.

That’s too bad, he had it going.

Corpas had fairly heavy workloads, 78 games, 76 games, on pace for 81 games when this happened. Hopefully it’s not too serious.

    That’s too bad about Manny.

What is the status of Ryan Speier’s rehab?

I think that it’s abundantly obvious that the Rocks need to go out and get another arm for the bullpen by the trade deadline. It’s just too much to lose both Corpas and Buchholz from your relief corp and still expect to protect all of those gems our starting rotation has been putting up recently. While scouring over the Rock’s AAA team and it looks as if our three in-house options are: Steven Register, Damian Moss, or Ryan Mattheus. However, I’m curious whether Tracy or Jack feels any of these guys can fill in adequately? I don’t think any of them could handle the set-up role, but they might fill a role a la Joel Peralta earlier this year.
