Recap: Angels 11, Rockies 3

Turning point _ After Jason Marquis gave up three runs in a 30-pitch first, the Rockies put runners on first and second with no outs in the second, but Joe Saunders got Troy Tulowitzki to fly out, struck out Chris Iannetta and retired Ian Stewart. The Angels then scored three more runs in the second _ another 30-pitch inning for Marquis _ the final two on Vladimir Guerrero’s homer with two out to take a 6-0 lead.
At the plate _ Designated hitter Garrett Atkins singled twice and homered in four at-bats. It was Atkins’ sixth homer of the season, fourth against a left-hander. …Dexter Fowler hit his third triple in the eighth and scored on second baseman Macier Izturis’ throwing error. …Guerrero doubled home the Angels’ first run in the first and hit a two-run homer in the second. …Bobby Abreu doubled home a run in the second and hit a two-run homer off Alan Embree in the eighth. …Chone Figgins went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
On the mound _ Marquis lasted 3 1/3 in his shortest start of the season. He went 3 2/3 innings May 13 against the Astros. The eight runs, seven earned, Marquis allowed were two more than he gave up in 22 1/3 innings in his past three starts. He faced 10 batters with runners in scoring position in the first two innings, and five of the six runs he allowed in those innings came with two out. … Left-handed hitters are 11-for-33 against the left-handed Embree. …Saunders gave up three singles and Atkins’ homer before leaving in the seventh, and one of those hits _ an infield single by Iannetta in the fifth _ should have been scored an error on shortstop Erick Aybar.
Numbers game 0 hits in 12 at-bats with seven strikeouts for Clint Barmes in the three-game series as his average fell 15 points to .275.

Their first series loss since houston, they made a hell of a run there. A loss doesn’t hurt so bad when you are over .500, but they’ll need to win series after series to be competitive from here on out.
This is why we should be concerned about the high pitch counts. Marquis looked like his needle was on E from pitch 1. He had nothing going for him. Tracy needs to get a handle on that or he might end up doing more harm than good for however long he’s managing this team.
