Chacin Stumbles, Drillers Fall
Jhoulys Chacin had a rare poor start Friday for Double-A Tulsa, leading to a 10-2 loss against Springfield in a game that decided the first-half winner in the North Division of the Texas League.
Chacin gave up eight hits and six runs in 5 1/3 innings with three walks and five strikeouts. He had poor command of all three of his pitches _ fastball, changeup and curveball, and the first two in particular _ while throwing a total of 98 pitches, 57 for strikeouts.
He was 86-92 mph and averaged 89 mph with his fastball, which is the norm for Chacin, but threw just 35 of 62 fastballs for strikes. Chacin never got into any kind of rhythm. He was pitching to avoid contact and wasn’t aggressive in the strike zone.
The game was the second for Tulsa in the second half. But because the Drillers and Springfield finished the first half tied Sunday with 38-32 records, their first meeting in the second half served as a one-game playoff to decide the first-half champion.
Chacin is 6-6 with a 3.35 ERA. In his four previous starts this month, he was 3-1 with a 1.98 ERA and while winning his two outings prior to Friday, Chacin had allowed three runs in 14 1/3 innings with two walks, 14 strikeouts and seven hits allowed.
In other Drillers news, left-hander Greg Smith is scheduled to start Sunday and throw 75 pitches in his second rehab outing for the Drillers. Samuel Deduno is scheduled to start Monday for Tulsa and throw about 60 pitches. It will be his first game since June 6 when he strained his left oblique.
Pitcher Brandon Durden was sent from Tulsa to high Class A Modesto where he began the season. Durden, who went 1-2 with a 4.13 ERA for the Drillers, will rejon the Nuts’ rotation, filling the spot of left-hander Christian Friedrich, who is likely to miss another couple weeks due to left elbow inflammation.
