Decision Looms for Catcher

June 30, 2009 | 9:02 am | 15

Yorvit Torrealba, who had to deal with the kidnapping of his son in his native Venezuela, has gone through his minor-league conditioning.

He arrived in Los Angeles Monday night and is expected to be activated.

What should Dan O’Dowd do?

(a) Activate Torrealba and send out Paul Phillips.

(b) Activate Torrealba and send out Carlos Gonzalez, keeping three catchers.

(c) Activate Torrealba and outright Omar Quintanilla, risking the loss of him on waivers.

(d) Released Torrealba if no trade can be made.

(e) Another suggession.

    C, d, and e
try to trade him and atkins for some relief pitching and who really cares what happens to Omar quintinilla due to the fact he doesn’t really do anythjng with a bat at the big league level but I will admit he is pretty sharp with a glove but with that said I don’t think he would be very intriguing on waivers

Phillips has been a pleasant surprise but Torrealba did a great job in helping lead the Rockies to the World Series in 2007 and he has to be activated and serve as Iannetta’s backup. Keeping three catchers would be pointless because the third catcher Phillips would just get a few pinch hit opportunities while Gonzalez and Quintanilla can play out in the field.

It’s unfortunate that the situation with his child may cause him his roster spot. Phillips has played pretty well IMO and is easily more of a threat at the plate giving them options off the bench. And given Yorvit’s higher salary I would also vote for him to go for. This is the type of situation that will just make you groan no matter what is decided.

Another concern about the roster is what are they going to do with Jeff Baker? Are they going to designate him for assignment? If so I doubt he makes it without being claimed.

Phillips would have to be outrighted, right? (As he’s out of options.) Also, if you release Torrealba, you still pay his salary.

I think you have to go “A” and aim for Phillips passing through waivers and agrees to go to AAA. If he’s claimed and gets a ML roster spot, you’re happy for him.

Torrealba’s career ML #’s are not great:
    .249 AVG .310 OBP 390 SLG

but neither are Phillips’s career minor league numbers:
    .276 AVG .323 OBP .382 SLG

Ostensibly there was something about Torrealba that the Rockies liked when they brought him here, because his numbers were the same and he wasn’t so young that they should have expected a big improvement. It’s hard to see 40 AB’s being worth more than that, esp. when considering their overall records.

I’ll go with C. Omar is very good defensively, but it seems that he is the least likely to be claimed as well as the lowest impact to the big picture.

I think we keep 3 catchers at the big league level, because either Torreabla or Phillips can be used as effective trade bait. In the event we lose Omar, and end up trading either Torry or Phillips, we can always promote someone from AAA to replace Omar (EY2?) or get a comporable player back in whatever trades we make.

Here’s a question: What do you think it would take for the Red Sox to part with Saito? Could the following scenario play out:

Rockies Get: Saito, big bowl of chowdah

Red Sox Get: Spilly, Torrealba/Phillips, (something else?)

I say send out Phillips. If you lose him on waivers (doubtful), you still have Bellorin you can always bring up when needed. Furthermore, I believe a decision on Jeff Baker is looming later this week. When that time comes replace Q with Baker. Q is very replaceble. The Rockies have Herrera if they need a middle IF. I doubt anyone will claim Q. Baker gives the team more defensive flexibilty and protection for Helton at first in the event Atkins is traded.

Package Phillips with Q and Atkins for arm(s)

Phillips has been good, but I lean towards “A”. IMHO Torrealba seems like a good ‘field captain’ when he’s out there. Since Ianetta has been the starter, I’ve always had in my mind that we have 1a and 1b as catchers. I’m looking at this primarily as a defensive/leadership role more than offense. I could be swayed, but I like having Torrealba in our lineup and clubhouse. IF (knocking on wood) we continue to make a run into the fall having those 2 catchers who were around in ’07 will certainly be a positive.

    Go Rockies!!

    A. PP has held his own, but he fights it behind the plate on defense. He’s a great guy, but the minors are full of those.

YT is good with pitchers, especially the young Latin pitchers.

Yorvit has no arm, and has a big contract for no armed catcher. Little trade value, but would probably be picked up on waivers and the Rockies are left eating the contract.

Phillips is nice catcher, and ok, but has been a career AAAA player. Not sure he is an improvement over Torrealba as I think they are about equal all-in-all. Phillips might make it through waivers and be reassigned to AAA Col. Springs.

So….if the Rockies are going to pay Torrealba anyway, might as well use him. Active YT, send Phillips down, and hope he clears. If he doesn’t…oh well. Career minor league catchers are a dime a dozen.

  • Seidle | June 30, 2009 | 5:46 pm

Take a chance on sending Phillips down, if he clears work on trading Yorvit.

  • Agbayani | June 30, 2009 | 5:59 pm

Some pretty sensible comments here. Phillips had a nice short run with the big club, but there’s just nothing in his history that says anything beyond “replacement level.”. And Q is barely above that. Neither guy is worth keeping, particularly if it costs us the loss of someone valuable.
It’d be great to clear some Yorvit salary, and that’s not out of the question.

I think for now you need to keep Torelba as the personal catcher for DLR. He seems to be more relaxed with Torealba catching him. If Torelba can keep DLR pitching at a high level, that’s a pretty impressive 5th starter.

Interesting that Phillips is starting today.
