Recap: Rockies 3, Dodgers 0

Turning point: Jason Marquis, leading 1-0 and pitching a gem, took matters into his own hands in the seventh inning. Brad Hawpe had been standing at third base with one out for most of the inning while Ian Stewart walked, Carlos Gonzalez struck out and Chris Iannetta walked to the load the bases. Marquis, desperate for run support in one the best-pitched games in Rockies history, dunked a soft single into left field to score two runs.
At the plate: The Rockies didn’t get much offense, but thanks to Jason Marquis — both on the mound and at the plate — they didn’t need much. Brad Hawpe was 2-for-3 and scored the game’s first run with a solo home run in fourth inning. He scored again in the seventh inning . . . Marquis delivered the big blow of the game in the seventh inning with his two-run single. Chris Iannetta, expecting the throw from the left field to go through to the plate, was caught trying to go to the third base, which ended the inning . . . Carlos Gonzalez struck out three times, including once on three pitches in the seventh inning with one out and runners on first and third.
On the mound: Jason Marquis pitched one of the great games in Rockies history to win his 10th game, shutting out the Dodgers on just two hits, walking none and striking out three. He threw just 86 pitches, 66 strikes and 20 balls. . . Chad Billingsley struck out 11 in 7 2/3 innings.
Numbers game: 2 complete game shutouts for the Rockies this year. Aaron Cook threw the other on May 21 at Atlanta, allowing four hits and winning 9-0. The Rockies also have two other shutout victories _ 3-0 at Arizona on April 7 and 3-0 against San Diego on May 29.

Guess that answers questions any of us had about Jason Marquis and a blister. Or any questions about Todd Helton’s fielding abilities, as if we had any of those.
Nice win…again on the road.
Almost time to defend Coors Field.
Wow!!! Great game by Marquis!! I’m not sure what is more impressive, the shutout or throwing under 90 pitches for the game!!!
Hopefully we can keep it going tomorrow and take the series!!!
The Jason Marquis game. Absolutely brilliant.
86 pitches? are you kidding me? what a performance.
The strikeouts are starting to disturb me a little bit. I don’t know how many we have had this series but I’m pretty sure its in the mid 20’s. That is not good.
Another tid-bit, of Brad’s 101 Career Home Runs, 18 of them are against the Dodgers (as called by the Dodgers TV Broad Caster)
This team has achieved the balance of veterans and youth. They are still frustrating with all of the strikeouts, but at least last night to me it seemed against a great pitcher they were swinging.
Cargo seems to be stuck in AAAA mode right now, no questions on his defense for me, but as the FSN booth pointed out, he is getting himself into 0-2 counts. Why should a pitcher throw him a strike? Perhaps his learning curve is still a work in progress. I wonder if he will stay with the club if this continues on the homestand? Perhaps will just get called back up in a month if they send him down instead of outrighting Q or Phillips?
The Marquis acquisition is making O’Dowd look like a genius. What a performance! Players were coming on and off the field so quickly it looked like a carousel.
Jason Marquis was dominant. I love his competitiveness, he just battles. Jeff Huson said he went “Little League” last night (both pitching and hitting star); I loved that. And he’ll keep it up too!
The strikeouts cause me concern. When this team was flailing early in this season, they were notorious at leaving runners in scoring position. Then during much of the recent run, they changed that. But it is now back. They need to knock that off!
Gonzalez has skills – but he’s feeling the pressure right now. Send him back to Colorado Springs to regroup. Spilly and Smith platooning in left works for me, and Dexter needs to keep getting his maximun reps.
Win today and win the series. Then dominate at Coors Field for 10 games (7-3 would be sweet) prior to the All Star break. The second half of the season will be alot of fun for us fans!!!!
