Right-hander Brandon Hynick of the Colorado Springs Sky Sox was selected the PCL Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 29-July 5.

Hynick threw the first perfect game in Sky Sox history, a seven-inning effort against the Portland Beavers last Tuesday night in Colorado Springs.

Hynick struck out six batters and induced six fly outs and nine ground outs in the 2-0 Sky Sox victory. Prior to Hynick’s, the last perfect game in the PCL was in 2007 by Manny Parra of the Nashville Sounds against the Round Rock Express.

Hynick is in his first year with the Sky Sox and his fourth season overall in professional baseball after being drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the eighth round of the 2006 MLB draft out of Birmingham-Southern College.

The right-hander is 7-5 with a 3.50 ERA in 15 starts this season, and has won five of his last seven decisions.

    Tracy,

How does this guy project in the big leagues?

Hynick is not thought of as having great stuff, and so has never been a highly regarded prospect. He has low K rates, but really good K/BB ratio. Somewhat homer-prone flyball pitcher. I’d guess he projects to a back of the rotation guy. It would be interesting to see a list of other pitchers with similar minor league K and BB rates and repertoire to see how they fared in MLB.

i’ve thought for a while now that hynick would be good trade bait for us. With other teams looking for young pitching, maybe he could be trhown in with Atkins or someone to bring back a little more than we could otherwise get. If he’s homer-prone, like Mike says, he probably won’t fair well at Coors.
