Phillips Heads to Triple-A

Catcher Paul Phillips cleared waivers on Monday, and accepted an assignment to Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Phillips could have declined the assignment and become a free agent, but he felt comfortable during his time with the Rockies, and manager Jim Tracy made it clear that he felt Phillips was an asset.
With that in mind, Phillips, who has spent more than a decade in the minor leagues, figured his chances to getting a legitimate big-league opportunity is better with the Rockies than going to an organization where he is an outsider.
The Rockies attempted to trade Yorvit Torrealba, which would have allowed them to keep Phillips, but a deal with Florida never materialized. The Rockies felt playing in Florida would help Torrealba, whose family moved from Venezuela to Florida after an aborted kidnap attempt of his child.

This works out very good for the Rockies. Phillips is a great assest for this year and possibly next (I can’t remember if Yorvit has another year on his deal or not).
First I have heard the confirmation that they were working a deal.
Does anyone if he was ok with that or had the club made that decision for him?
Jason – I am pretty sure his contract is up at the end of the season.
Jason,
Torrealba has an option year for 2010. If either the team or Torrealba himself chooses not to exercise the option, Torrealba will leave the organization as a free agent. As of now, I would assume, with that contract, they will not be having Yorvit back next year.
