Marquis Gets Rest
Jason Marquis didn’t pitch in the All-Star Game, but Rockies manager Jim Tracy is still holding the 11-game winner back for Sunday’s game in San Diego.
Marquis will have seven full days of rest. The rotation initially was set to protect Marquis in case he pitched Tuesday in the All-Star Game.
Tracy, however, decided to give Marquis the extra day of rest instead of switching him in the rotation with Jason Hammel, who will start on Saturday at San Diego.
Tracy admitted that Marquis has had a problem with the middle finger on his right hand, and the extra day off will give the skin another day to heal. It was first mentioned that Marquis had a crack in the skin on the middle right finger when he struggled in a start against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim last month, but Thursday was the first time the Rockies actually discussed the problem.
Marquis will move back ahead of Hammel in the rotation on July 24 when he starts the opening game of a three-game series against San Francisco at Coors Field.
