Turning point: After missing a big opportunity in the second inning — bases loaded, nobody out but only one run scored on a walk — the Rockies started to break out in the fourth inning. Ian Stewart walked and two batters later Carlos Gonzalez reached on an error. Aaron Cook — who brought in the first run with the second-inning walk — sacrificed the runners over and Dexter Fowler brought both home with a single to right to make it a 3-1 game.

At the plate: Todd Helton doubled in his first two at-bats and went 4-for-5 with a run scored . . . Clint Barmes put the game away with a three-run home run in the sixth inning, his 11th of the season . . . Chris Iannetta struck out in his first three at-bats, including once looking with the bases loaded in the second. But he drove in a run in the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly . . . Dexter Fowler reached base three times, walking twice in addition to his two-run single . . . Troy Tulowizki and Fowler each extended hitting streaks to seven games . . . Carlos Gonzalez was 2-for-5, scored twice and stole his sixth base . . . Seth Smith homered in his second consecutive game, a two-run shot in the eighth inning.

On the mound: Aaron Cook continued to dominate the Padres, improving his career numbers against the Padres to 13-4 with 2.66 ERA. He allowed 12 runners in six innings, but pitched out of jams with little damage to earn his ninth win of the season. He allowed just one run on eight hits and four walk and struck out a season-high eight batters . . . Matt Daley pitched two scoreless innings for a second consecutive appearance. He threw 16 pitches to Luis Rodriguez in the eighth inning before finally walking him . . . Manny Corpas returned to the bullpen and pitched a scoreless ninth . . . Padres starter Chad Gaudin allowed four runs — just one earned — in five innings.

The rockies will take this one. Any time your starter is struggling yet only allows 1 run, things are on your side. Hopefully cook will come out of his funk soon. Too many flyball outs for cook today.

    Seth smith continues to impress…………….

Dustin, I agree – Seth Smith has earned playing time; give him more!

Aaron Cook has proved to have guts and moxey – he’s a keeper, and I am glad he’s continues to go out and take the ball and battle. He plays baseball (the swing to protect the runner stealing was sweet). That will pay off big time.

This team needs to do this – take series’ from the teams below them in the standings. Battle. Team first.

I liked what I saw last nite.

Can you say Rocktober II? The best infield in the game, power 1-8 (sometimes 1-9) and Herges is back. Cannot underappreciate what he did in 2007. Still believe we can package Atkins, Gonzalez and De La Rosa for a prime starting pitcher plus??? Hope Helton can hit double #500 at home.

    Don’t jinx it Taxi Driver!

Solid win for the Rox and Seth “Mr. Late Night” Smith impresses yet again.

Completely off subject here, but if you were O’Dowd would you trade Atkins and use the money saved on him to sign Matzek? Granted, Matzek can’t help you this year and probably not next, but they took this approach when they traded Larry Walker to the Cards and used the savings to sign Dexter Fowler. Just curious what all of you think.

  • Agbayani said:

Absolutely you’d trade Atkins to anyone willing to take on a pro data share of his contract. As of today, that would be about 2.8 million bucks to sign Matzek or to pocket for the offseason (or for Charlie, Dick & Co. to save?? Let’s hope that’s not the plan)

Yeah, Smith should be starting every day. I’m just going to throw a thought out there..today I saw on tv that Tyler Walker has been designated for assignment by the Phillies..and I firmly believe the Rockies NEED to sign this guy. He throws hard, and would definitely be an upgrade over Juan Rincon. He has good numbers this year pitching at the Phillies tiny stadium..maybe signing him would help relieve the pressure of O’Dowd to make a trade at the deadline. What do y’all think??
