Star-crossed left-hander Greg Smith was placed on the Triple-A Colorado Springs disabled list Tuesday with lower-back spasms. Smith, who last pitched Sunday is 1-1 with a 5.96 ERA in six starts for Colorado Springs. He also has pitched at two lower levels on rehabilitation.

Reliever Shane Lindsay will join low Class-A Asheville on a rehab assignment Thursday. Lindsay is 2-0 with a 2.84 ERA in 12 appearances at Double-A Tulsa and hasn’t pitched since May 6 because of a right elbow strain.

Thus far Smith looks like Jason Hirsh from the Jennings trade, lots of talk but no real reults. Hopefully it is just a small setback

True, but the primary difference is Hirsh was the key part of the Jennings trade. Smith was more like the Buchholz, a throw-in third player. Too early to give up hope, but Smith has been nowhere near expectations this season.

Is Smith under contract beyond this year?

Julian: For the most part. Smith falls under the reserve rule–he’s there’s unless they decide not to tender him a contract, and he’s not arbitration-eligible. He has just under 1 yr MLB service time, and I believe he has an option year remaining after this.
