Doors closing to possible trades

The Colorado Rockies had their eye on Orioles closer George Sherrill, who was traded to the Dodgers on Thursday, and Orioles lefty Mark Hendrickson, who the team apparently has pulled off the market following the Sherrill trade. The Rockies also have expressed interest in the Nationals’ Nick Johnson, but the Marlins have made an offer for the left-handed hitting first baseman.
ESPN’s Jayson Stark reports that the Rockies are reluctant to part with the prospects the Orioles want in return for Hendrickson. The Orioles first asked for Triple-A second baseman Eric Young Jr. When the Rockies rejected that, the Orioles asked for Double-A reliever Matt Reynolds, a left-hander who has emerged this season for the Rockies, going 5-3 with 1.54 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 58 1/3 innings between Modesto and Tulsa.
We’ll be keeping track of rumors and moves here and at the Rocky Mountain Independent all day.

Why would the Rox want Nick Johnson. He’s a great player when healthy, but we already have a great left handed first baseman!
He would be purely a bat off the bench.
Why would they want Hendrickson either? Didn’t he pitch here before, with mixed success? Seems like a bottom of the barrel type deal.
Glad to see EY Jr.’s not on the market….
Glad they would not let EY Jr go for Hendrickson, too – really would like to see little EY stay around.
The Rockies really want to win this year, that’s why we’re hearing wide ranging rumors and names thrown out there. They may not all make sense to us, but it tells me management has been meeting extensively lately and honestly evaluating the roster to see what’s missing. I hope that’s the case.
Interest in a left-handed bat like Johnson simply says Smith is an everyday player now and they want to replace his bat off the bench with another dangerous lefty bat.
Why people are so protective of Carlos Gonzalez is strange to me. If they were to send him down, which probably isn’t the case at this time, it’s not giving up on him. It’s trying to win this season. Gonzalez would be right back in September and on the roster in 2010.
I’m glad that the Rockies are not parting with their top prospects. From what I read in this blog, I was OK with the trade of Connor Graham because it sounded like he was not a top prospect, and he may never have played for the Rockies.
I thought that we were going to try to trade Garrett Atkins for a reliever. Do we still have Garrett Atkins because teams have not shown that much interest in him, or is it because the Rockies feel like they need his bat off the bench?
Connor Graham is going to be a good reliever in the future. I also believe Reynolds will be too. Good job DOD not trading for a big lefty that to be frank..isn’t too trustworthy.
I love this site for all the interaction.
Here’s my take. Hold the line until Sept call-ups, or sooner. Hammel had a terrible July, so here’s hoping August is better.
Offense doesn’t really need to get hot, just better with risp. I can’t count the number of games we lost recently (and won in June) because of 1 or 2 timely hits.
If we go 6-4 every ten games we’ll have 91 wins. Should keep us right in the thick of things.
60 games left. 6 out of every ten gives us 36 more wins.
Attainable? I do believe it is.
roxnsox, you might be thinking of Mark Hutton, who was with the Rockies for about a half season with in 1997 and couldn’t find the plate. Hendrickson is a big lefty who’s mostly been a starter, but has pitched well for the Orioles in the bullpen this season. He was, however, part of that complicated trade that brought Joe Kennedy to the Rockies, but Hendrickson went to Tampa Bay in the deal.
As for Atkins, I think the lack of a trade has two reason: 1) lack of interest in him, and 2) a desire to have his bat off the bench. The Rockies aren’t going to just him away, and the interest in paying his salary and giving up players hasn’t been strong. You’ll likely see him traded in the offseason, but for now he’s a solid backup at a couple positions and a guy who usually has hit a little better in the second half.
Just read that the Rockies acquired Joe Biemel. I haven’t seen what they gave up.
I thought Beimel did not want to be pitching in Colorado and chose the Nationals over here for similiar money. Is that what someone had posted on here prior Steve?
Hopefully Beimel’s price tag came down a little since he didn’t seem to draw much interest from anyone else.
Beimel traded to rockies according to Rob Neyer’s chat on ESPN. Anybody have details?
Jon Heyman is saying two minor leaguers on his Twitter.
Karl, I heard the same thing – that Beimel spurned the Rockies. What does anyone think–Could this affect his attitude for the worse now that he has to join them?
Altho, he’s an idiot if he’s not happy to be coming here from the Nats….
Joe Beimel is a professional that just spent four of the most miserable months of his professional career in Washington. I think he’ll be happy to be apart of the playoff race.
Townie, duly noted, just hope they didnt give up a ton to get him, isnt he on a one year too?
I remember he used to scare me coming out of the Dodgers’ pen.
Yeah, he’s on a one year deal. So it’s a two month rental.
