Rockies Add LHP Joe Beimel

July 31, 2009 | 1:49 pm | 29

The Rockies filled their major need shortly before Friday’s trading deadline.

They acquired left-handed reliever Joe Beimel from the Washington Nationals for right-handed reliever Ryan Mattheus. Mattheus is recovering from reconstructive right elbow surgery. The Rockies also sent right-handed pitcher Robinson Fabian to the Nationals.

Beimel will join Franklin Morales as the Rockies two left-handed relievers. The Rockies made a strong run to sign Beimel as a free agent during the off-season, but he opted to sign with the Nationals.

How much of the farm was given up here? Beimel is only on a 1 year deal correct?

  • Redhawk | July 31, 2009 | 2:08 pm

Washington Post says 2 minor league pitchers. No names yet.

  • Townie | July 31, 2009 | 2:16 pm

He’s on a one year and Beimel projects as a Type B free agent, which I guess means the Rockies would get compensation when he leaves. I’m not totally straight on how all of that works.

  • Karl | July 31, 2009 | 2:27 pm

Yeah we have time to learn that, because the type A and you get two picks, I thought type B you get 1, but not positive.

Was surprised that they picked up another lefty. Works out good, hope like you said Townie, he is motivated to be on a contender now while improving his value as well for next year. Who knows, maybe he will stick around, but let’s just focus on this year.

  • roxnsox | July 31, 2009 | 2:30 pm

Tracy, Jack, or Steve – how do you grade this acquisition?

  • Karl | July 31, 2009 | 2:38 pm

More good news, no more Peavy in the division Heyman is reporting.

  • Tracy Ringolsby | July 31, 2009 | 2:38 pm

Seems like a win. Gives Rockies a veteran lefty. They give up reliever coming off surgery.

  • Julian | July 31, 2009 | 2:39 pm

Who will be removed from the Rockies’ roster to make room for Beimel?

  • Diego Castillo | July 31, 2009 | 2:45 pm

I think Juan Rincon it’s going to be DFA to make room for Beimel.. I’m from Venezuela and instead Rincon’s is from my country i think he’s the weakest pitcher of the bullpen.

    What do you think?

  • Agbayani | July 31, 2009 | 2:46 pm

Really, really nice dealing by O’Dowd leading up to this year’s trading deadline. Mattheus was turning into a nonprospect until his K rate zoomed lately, but then he fell back severely with surgery that will keep him out all next year I’d imagine. So we lose a power arm that’s a big question mark. Beimel and Betancourt give this club some quality setup guys for Street. And they push Morales and Daley back to their best roles at this stage in their careers: lefty and righty specialists, respectively. I imagine Chacin or Fogg or Rincon would go back down or be waived now. To be honest, it doesn’t matter, since those guys are now pushed back to the low-leverage/mop-up roles even if they stick.

At any rate, I’m very happy with these deals. This is a bullpen that has sufficient talent to keep this club in the race, something that probably wasn’t true until now given the loss of our top 3 setup guys (Buchholz, Corpas, Embree) to injury this season.

  • Seidle | July 31, 2009 | 2:52 pm

I really like this deal, Beimel should do well with a good defense behind him and being on a team that has a shot.

  • robba | July 31, 2009 | 2:59 pm

So who’ll be the odd man out in the pen? Hoping it’s not Fogg, who may have solidified his position as the long man with a nice effort yesterday.

Sorry that Atkins didn’t get enough interest. At this point, he’s become something of a distraction; a young veteran who is stumbling along in a terrible slump, and whose position has gone to a better leather man who is still developing as a hitter. I was hoping he’d get an opportunity with a team that could play him regularly and wait for him to get straightened out at the plate.

  • roxnsox | July 31, 2009 | 3:00 pm

Diego, I agree that Rincon has been weak. I wish it were different for your countryman! (but there are 5 other Venezuelans on the team – as you probably know :-) Now the bullpen has been shored up and he will probably be the one to be designated as you suggest.

  • Reader f/k/a Mike | July 31, 2009 | 3:07 pm

Townie and Karl: So far Beimel is grading out as a type “B” FA. If he leaves as as FA and you offer arb and he declines and signs elsewhere you receive what’s known as a “sandwich” pick–an additional pick between the 1st and 2nd round. Not sure of details such as how the various sandwich picks among different teams are ordered.

The risk is that the player could accept arb. With Beimel (and perhaps Betancourt), that’s probably worth the risk.

  • Reader f/k/a Mike | July 31, 2009 | 3:08 pm

I don’t think it’s a problem that Atkins remains. It doesn’t seem like he’s making waves about playing time. I’m sure he will look for a chance at a full-time job in the off-season.

  • Townie | July 31, 2009 | 3:16 pm

Well it sounds like O’Dowd’s streak of sensible deals continues. No guarantee it’ll result in a playoff berth, but he’s really done the job of giving the team it’s best chance without hurting the bright future.

  • Cesar Carvajal | July 31, 2009 | 3:23 pm

Yeah, i’m also from Venezuela, and I think Rincon is the weakest pitcher in the bullpen. When he came, I though he could do the job.

Well, welcome to Beimel and hope he can help Morales and the Rockies in the bullpen.

    GO ROCKIES!!!

  • Matt | July 31, 2009 | 3:27 pm

    Will Beimel be available tonight?

  • Diego Castillo | July 31, 2009 | 3:34 pm

Nice to know that there is another Venezuelan Rockies Fan here. I’ll be in Denver for the series against the Reds (early september). With that i’ll come true one of my dreams, to see the Rockies alive!

Go Rockies, we have the right team to make the playoffs again!

  • Brian H | July 31, 2009 | 3:52 pm

This is great. We got that second lefty.

And hopefully, we move Rincon out of here.

  • Dylan M. | July 31, 2009 | 3:58 pm

No he won’t be available until Saturday, and that’s a maybe. Very very good deal to get Beimel, which for some reason I’ve always been big on. I wanted him in the offseason and was quite saddened to see him sign elsewhere. I figured he’d be the prototypical pitcher for Coors Field. And now he’s here and I’m excited. Props to O’Dowd AGAIN.

  • Tracy Ringolsby | July 31, 2009 | 4:01 pm

My guess would be that Rincon goes when Beimel arrives. Chacin will be a longer guy and get his feet on the ground. Fogg is excellent at dealing with a difficult roll.

I think Morales will be the lefty who gets the bigger challenges while Beimel is more a left-handed specialist. Morales has the assortment and stuff to get both right-handed and left-handed hitters out. His at-bat against Cancel last night was big. It was a strong rebound from the previous appearance. He came in, throwing strikes, and not afraid to pitch.

  • Townie | July 31, 2009 | 4:04 pm

As far as the Rockies interest in Nick Johnson. Obviously that didn’t work out, but are the Rockies really hoping to add another lefty bat to the bench? And if that’s the case, what about a guy like Tony Clark?

  • Karl | July 31, 2009 | 4:13 pm

Good thought on Clark, but I guess I don’t understand the lefty move in general. Is this signifying that CarGo is not the guy off the bench? We know its not Q, poor guy is like a psuedo player coach there.
Cargo is in the lineup again tonight. Perhaps they are just trying to shake things up and make it more of a platoon with Fowler and CarGo in CF and the Spilly and Smith in left?

Maybe a move to expand as rosters do in September? Could they sign him to a minor league contract before that and put him on the 40 man and expose Q? Perhaps.

  • Cesar Carvajal | July 31, 2009 | 4:22 pm

Hey, Diego, nice to hear that, hopefully in the future i will be able to make that dream come true for me too.

    Enjoy the game…

  • Julian | July 31, 2009 | 4:25 pm

Kudos to Dan O’Dowd for bringing the Rockies two solid relievers without giving up a top tier prospect. Well done.

Now we need for some of the hitters to break out of their slumps. I think that the odds are good of that occurring.

  • Tracy Ringolsby | July 31, 2009 | 5:45 pm

The Rockies had interest in Tony Clark. He had not played and they wanted him to get some at-bats at Colorado Springs as a mini spring and he didn’t like the idea. They would like to have a veteran presence off the bench, particularly if Smith, who has proven he can pinch-hit, gets more regular playing time.

  • Brian | July 31, 2009 | 11:48 pm

I really like Biemel – he was the guy I wanted. I didn’t want a guy that would cost a big prospect. My only reservation with Biemel is that I think the Rockies had interest and he signed with a team that he knew was a crappy team. On the mound he seems like a competitor, but it makes me wonder why he would sign with a club like Washington. Clark always seems to hurt the Rockies, but I don’t see how his lack of versatility could help the team until after rosters expand.

Because by March 18 (when he signed), that’s what was available. I think he got caught in the FA crunch this offseason when many teams didn’t have the normal budget for FA signings. Beimel had been waiting for offers and by the time spring training games were going on, he took what he could get.
