Colorado Rockies pitching prospect Christian Friedrich, the team’s 2008 first-round pick, struck out 10 batters Wednesday for high Class-A Modesto. It was his third consecutive start with at least 10 strikeouts. He allowed three hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings.

Friedrich also received his fourth consecutive no decision. He is 2-0 with a 1.70 ERA for Modesto and 5-3 with a 1.95 ERA and 118 strikeouts in 87 2/3 innings between Modesto and low Class-A Asheville this season.

When does Friedrich get promoted to Tulsa?

Depends on how many pitches he threw. They wanted him to be able to go to 100 before sending him to Tulsa. With him only going 5 2/3 he probably didn’t reach that point.

It seems like he could have very well reached the 100 pitch count in 5 2/3 though. It said he faced 24 batters (10 k’s, 7 flyouts, 4 hits, 3 walks). Now assuming he threw 4-5 pitches to each batter, that would put him in the 96-120 pitch range.

That said, perhaps management is more concerned with the 4 hits and 3 walks in 5 2/3 innings? It’s one thing to give up 7 hits/walks to a team that has maybe 1 or 2 guys that will eventually be big leaguers in A, but that starts getting dicier as you move up levels.

Friedrich is ready to move to Tulsa, even if he did have a shaky start two nights ago. Nicasio is ready for Modesto. This is an easy move it just needs to be made.
