Can Schedule Help Rotation?
The Rockies are off on Monday. Should they take advantage of that day by skipping the fifth starter spot the next time through the rotation?
With the off day, the Rockies could bring Jorge De La Rosa back on normal rest on Tuesday and follow him with Ubaldo Jimenez on Wednesday, Jason Marquis on Thursday, Sept. 3, and Jason Hammel on Friday, Sept. 4, before the fifth spot, which Josh Fogg filled this time around, is needed again on Sept. 5.

Yes Tracy, that is what I would like to see happen. That homestand needs to keep us healthy (in the race/standings).
Definitely, unless they win today and sweep SF. Then, giving the pitchers an extra day of rest wouldn’t be such a bad thing.
Tracy, Do you think that the Rox will go with Fogg in the 5 slot again after his rough outing last night? Does Rincon have enough arm strength to take a start? Herges? It looked like Fogg got tired in the 4th last night, and, as his manager pointed out, a bit tentative. Do we go with Josh again or move to 5th-starter-by-committee?
We certainly can’t throw Foggy out there again! Personally, I agree with skipping the 5 spot next week and hoping Cook will be ready after that. If not, then maybe we try Chacin again?
Will the Rockies be looking at adding Brad Penny from waivers? My understanding is he wouldn’t cost much, and he might be a better fill-in for Cook than Fogg or Chacin.
That’s about what I expected from Fogg. I know he caught lightning in a bottle a few times as the Dragon Slayer, but I never got why he’s praised so much (as a pitcher).
NO PENNY! NO PENNY!
Also, Russ Ortiz should be available at any time now too. What about him over Fogg? Scary thought… but just in case…
If we pitch Fogg or Ortiz can we at least get them an L screen out there so no one hurts them? Id rather see Chacin or Morales get a chance!
Russ Ortiz has been terrible for YEARS now.
Keep in mind that the Rockies are in the middle of very difficult stretch in terms of opposing teams, and it gets easier for a couple of weeks after the SF series. Next week, we’ve got the Mets, who are paying out more salary to their DL than we are to the entire roster. After that, the Diamondbacks, who (no disrespect) are not the best hitters out there. And we’re home the whole time. If we don’t have a meltdown between now and Sept 5, it won’t be a must-win game, so using a relievers to pitch the whole game isn’t a bad idea.
After that, hopefully Cook will be back to his old self by the time we need a 5th starter again…
