Recap: Giants 2, Rockies 0

Turning point: Colorado Rockies starter Ubaldo Jimenez pitched in and out of trouble through the first four innings without allowing a run until Pablo Sandoval hit a solo home run with two outs in the fifth inning to give the San Francisco Giants a 1-0 lead. The Giants added another run in the sixth inning.
At the plate: Troy Tulowitzki went 0-for-4 with a walk and had his eight-game hitting streak snapped. Tulowitzki was caught stealing twice in the game, the second time in front of a Brad Hawpe double . . . Todd Helton, who went 2-for-3, was the only Rockie with more than one hit . . . Eric Young Jr. had the Rockies’ first hit of the game, a two-out single in the third inning.
On the mound: Ubaldo Jimenez gave his team every chance to get him his 13th win of the season, but he instead lost for the first time since July 10. Jimenez allowed two runs on seven hits and three walks in seven innings and pitched out of jams in the first, second and fourth innings. The fourth-inning trouble started on a double by Juan Uribe that landed about three feet in front of the plate when JImenez, Chris Iannetta, and Ian Stewart couldn’t decide whose play it was on a pop-up in front of the plate . . . Matt Daley allowed an eighth-inning leadoff triple, but escaped unharmed when Eli Whiteside popped up a squeeze attempt for an inning-ending double play . . . Tim Lincecum bounced back from a so-so start Sunday and dominated the Rockies for eight shutout innings. He allowed four hits, three walks and struck out eight . . . Brian Wilson, who the Rockies last saw pitching three innings against them in Monday’s 14-inning thriller, picked up his 31st save.

Good game, it didn’t look like Lincecum or Ubaldo had it going early on.
Let’s get em tomorrow!
Another 10 strikeout night by the rocks!!! How can we stop this??
Sadly, I fear the Rockies have reverted to their Springtime form of not hitting their way out of a paper bag, a wet one at that. I continue to wonder how they can keep fielding third basemen hitting in the .220′s. I wonder if EYJr. could learn to play 3rd (for next year, obviously).
Dave, when bashing our weak hitting third basemen please keep this in mind. Ian Stewart turned 24 years old at the start of the season. He is hitting .223 with 19 HR’s and 104 K’s in 120 games. During the season he turned 24, Mike Schmidt batted .196 with 18 HR’s and 136 K’s in 132 games. The big difference is that the Phillies weren’t in a pennant race that year. It’s tough, but we have to have patience with Ian as he works his way through this. I still think he is too good of an athlete to give up on. We will need to reserve judgment on him for a few years yet.
It was a good game. The only thing I was wondering about is why don’t the Rockies consider bunting for base hits towards the 3rd base line and test Sandoval’s mobility. He is a heavy guy, and he was not 100% dealing with a calf injury. It seems the easiest way to get on base.
Yes they have lost three in a row, yes they are striking out at an alarming rate, but they are in the game at the end. If Hawpe’s ball tails a bit more, they might have been all tied up, but they weren’t and so we are at the 3 game losing streak again as in NY.
They have faced great pitching lately and now just have to learn from that, that’s what pros and good teams do. Time to get off the canvas and start swinging back now.
Yeah, they definitely could have done more to put pressure on the Giants defense, especially Sandoval. Mr. Young Jr. particularly should be paying attention to things like that. With his speed that he’s shown, it’s obvious he doesn’t need much to go wrong to beat one out on the infield.
Here’s to hoping they get a little creative tonight… and by creative I don’t mean multiple stolen base attempts by Tulowitzki.
I still believe Stewart is our long term 3rd baseman. He just needs to learn to hit consistently in the bigs. Which he will do I believe in time. There are only a select few who can come up and be consistent right away. Most go through ups and downs. Stewart had a pretty good year last year, this year has been more of a downer. I still love him in the lineup over Atkins mainly cuz of his defense.
