Recap: Giants 9, Rockies 5

Turning point: Rafael Betancourt relieved Franklin Morales with two out and the bases loaded in the seventh and on his second pitch, gave up a grand slam to Edgar Renteria on his second pitch that put the Giants ahead 6-5.
At the plate: Down one run in the eighth, the Rockies botched a chance to tie the game. Ian Stewart led off with a double, but Clint Barmes, attempting to sacrifice, popped out to pitcher Jeremy Affeldt. Stewart took third on Yorvit Torreaba’s single, but pinch hitter Garrett Atkins took a called third strike and Carlos Gonazlez struck out. …Todd Helton, who went 3-for-5, and Troy Tulowitzki, who went 4-for-5, hit back-to-back homers with two out in the fifth to give the Rockies a 3-1 lead. …Stewart went 3-for-5 with a single, triple and double and scored the Rockies fourth run in the sixth on Barmes’ sacrifice fly following his triple. …Torrealba singled on his final at-bat to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 10 games. …Renteria matched his career-high with five RBI, going 3-for-4 with a run-scoring double in the sixth in addition to to his seventh career grand slam.
On the mound: Jason Hammel left after facing two batters in the sixth, allowing four hits and two runs and throwing just 53 pitches, 37 strikes. …Morales relieved Hammel with no out, runners on second and third, a run home and the Rockies leading 4-2 and struck out Nate Schierholtz, Pablo Sandoval (called) and got pinch hitter Ryan Garko to ground out. Morales hit pinch hitter Fred Lewis with a 2-2 pitch to load the bases with one out in the seventh and struck out Eugenio Velez before giving way to Betancourt. …Juan Rincon, who started the eighth, failed to retire the four batters he faced, giving up a single to Juan Uribe, who ended up at third on right fielder Brad Hapwe’s two-base error, a walk, hitting a batter and giving up a two-run single to pinch-hitter Ryan Rohlinger. …Matt Cain gave up eight hits and four runs in six innings and threw 113 pitches. …The win went to Brandon Medders, who combined with Affeldt and closer Brian Wilson to pitch 2 2/3 scoreless innings after Alex Hinshaw gave up a run in relief of Cain.
Numbers game: 12 strikeouts Sunday for the Rockies, who struck out 30 times while getting swept by the Giants. The Rockies went 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position Sunday and 4-for-24 in the three-game series.

The failure to play fundamental baseball was the reason we lost this game and the series. Barmes needs to learn to bunt, he cant take a breaking ball over the middle and then try to bunt a high fastball two games in a row and pop out. We cant hit batters when we are up in the count. If we want to win the wild card we have got to get back to fundamental baseball.
One simple question. Why is Seth Smith not playing? I do not understand.
Yikes!
Hopefully we can pull out of this slump!
The Barmes thing is ridiculous. If he can’t bunt, which is kinda pathetic for a player of his caliber, then why keep attempting it? I hate hate hate giving away outs late in games that you’re losing.
The pen sure didn’t help, either.
They have another homestand coming up; they should be able to rebound. Ian Stewart is 6 for his last 12. Hopefully he’s coming out of his deep slump.
KKKKKKKKK, it has been are theme all year.
Ok, please somebody, I need a quick recap of this week, i was out of town on a road trip inside my country and I didn’t have access to an internet connection.
The last thing I could watch was the walk-off grand slam hitted by Spillborghs last monday. Then I return and lot of news, including news faces in the major team (like Young) and 5 straight losses.
Just a short recap PLEASE!!!
Ummm, recap would go:
The Rocks were at the top of the world following back-to-back extra inning wins and had everyone from Ma and Pa at home to the ESPN front page thinking they could overtake the Dodgers.
Then out of nowhere the entire team stopped hitting, especially in key situations. EY came up for the injured Dex and CarGo and looked terrific in some areas and terrible in others, getting thrown out his first two times on base in very ugly steal attempts.
Starting pitchers for the most part gave quality starts but with no run support and a few trips from the bullpen kept the Rocks from getting any wins and now they’ve lost five straight.
One thing I kept wondering is why we kept running on Whiteside in this series? How many times did he gun our guys down? One of my favorite things about the Rockies is how aggressive they are, but in this series it almost seemed like we were trying to steal just to prove we could do it. Gonzalez was nearly picked off in the first inning by Whiteside…barely barely beat the tag…and then a few innings later they send Stewart with two outs and Torrealba at the plate and it wasn’t even close. Torreable struck out (I think), so then we have the pitcher leading off the next inning? That really didn’t make sense to me.
So who will they becalling up in a few days. Giambi and who else. Ortiz looked bad Friday night in Colorado Springs. Murton, Miller, Colonel??
The cupboard is bare boys there is no Major League pitching help in AAA.
Callups: It helps if they’re on the 40-man already, since it’s full and it will take moves to add people. There’s some flexibility there in that injured players can be moved to the 60-day DL, but there’s not that many players eligible for the move (Reynolds?).
I’d guess Peralta and Flores will be back, and maybe Eaton (since they optioned him rather than DFA’d him). Hold your applause, please. Chacin. I wonder about Rogers, Deduno and Hynick. Someone will join the team, I’d guess.
I’d guess Murton. Colonel, no. Miller’s a tough one, as he’s not on the 40 and there’s already a bit of a logjam in the OF, but there have been hints (rewarding players for good seasons…)
KKKKKKKKK, it has been are theme all year.
They do strike out a lot–they’re on pace to set a franchise record.
OTOH, they are also on pace to be one of the 2-3 best offensive teams in franchise history relative to the league, if you adjust for park effects. (Some of the pre-humidor teams scored a heck of a lot of runs, but the park also boosted offense to an extreme degree.)
A lot of batters came up empty in key situations this weekend, but they have also shown their abilities this season and have been a big part of the team’s run. They can rebound.
All i can say is BIG BUMMER DUDE!!!!!!!!
Thanks f/k/a Mike,
Keeping focus on the big picture can be difficult during a slump.
Individual players hit the wall; so do teams.
A baseball season is a long test. With ups and downs.
I agree. The Rockies can rebound. They certainly have the talent.
In the next month, the test gets more difficult.
Let’s hope we see more ups than downs.
Tony Benjamin,
Loveland
