The Los Angeles Dodgers pulled off a pair of trades just minutes before the deadline to set rosters for the postseason. SI.com’s Jon Heyman reports the Dodgers acquired starting pitcher Jon Garland from the Arizona Diamondbacks and designated hitter/first baseman Jim Thome from the Chicago White Sox.

The Colorado Rockies had been in the mix to acquire Garland, who has a $10 million mutual option for 2010 with a hefty buyout, but elected to acquire Jose Contreras from the White Sox instead. Garland is 8-11 with a 4.29 ERA this season with the Diamondbacks.

No word on yet on how the Dodgers plan to use Thome, who last played first base regularly with the Philadelphia Philllies in 2005 and last played the position in 2007. Thome hit .252 with 23 home runs and 74 RBI for the White Sox, who told teams earlier Monday multiple players were available and then followed through with the two big trades.

Ouch, I would have rather had Garland over Contreras especially considering some recent outings by each pitcher.

Did they also get Ronnie Belliard?
