Recap: Rockies 5, Diamondbacks 4

Turning point: Jason Giambi came through for the Colorado Rockies again in the eighth inning, pinch-hitting with Yorvit Torrealba at second and first base open. The Arizona Diamondbacks chose to pitch to Giambi, who again drove in the go-ahead run, this time with a single to left-center. Giambi, who also drove in the go-ahead runs Wednesday against the Mets with an eighth-inning single, has at least one RBI in all three of his plate appearances with the Rockies.
At the plate: Seth Smith was 4-for-5 with two doubles. He drove in three of the Rockies’ five runs . . . Ian Stewart, who homered Thursday against the Mets, hit his 21st in the second inning, the first time he’s homered in back-to-back games since early June . . . Yorvit Torrealba extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a big eighth-inning single and later scored on Jason Giambi’s single . . . Carlos Gonzalez was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, including the game’s first run on one of Smith’s doubles . . . Brad Hawpe struck out four times, twice with runners in scoring position. He is 1-for-12 on the homestand . . . Todd Helton was 0-for-4, snapping a seven-game hitting streak . . . Troy Tulowitzki was 1-for-4 with an infield single . . . Clint Barmes was 0-for-3 with two strikeouts, and made two bad throws on back-to-back plays — only one was charged an error — in the fourth inning that cost the Rockies a run. In his last at-bat in the eighth inning, Barmes put down a sacrifice bunt to move Torrealba into scoring position . . . Eric Young Jr. scored his first major-league run after drawing a one-out walk as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning and scoring on Smith’s double.
On the mound: Jason Hammel pitched six solid innings, but cost himself in the third inning when he hit Ryan Roberts on a 2-2 count with one out. Hammel struck out Justin Upton behind Roberts, which would have been the third out if Hammel had managed to retire Roberts, who looked baffled by pitch selection during his at-bat. Instead, Roberts stole second base and scored along with Dan Haren on a single by Miguel Montero to tie the game. Hammel allowed three earned runs on five hits and three walks and struck out six . . . Matt Daley walked one and struck out two in a scoreless seventh . . . Randy Flores faced and retired two left-handers in the eighth inning . . . Rafael Betancourt finished eighth by retiring the only batter he faced . . . Franklin Morales walked one and struck out one as he recorded his second career save . . . The Rockies hit Diamondbacks starter Dan Haren hard in the first two innings with little to show for it. Good defensive plays in the outfield by Upton and Chris Young held the Rockies to one run in the first inning. After Ian Stewart’s home run in the second, Haren settled in and pitched six innings, allowing seven hits and a walk while striking out eight. He wasn’t involved in the decision, however, when the Arizona bullpen blew the lead he left it in the seventh inning . . . Diamondbacks manager A.J. Hinch stuck with right-hander Esmerling Vasquez in the seventh inning with left-hander Daniel Schlereth warming up in the bullpen. Vasquez pitched to Carlos Gonzalez, who singled, and Seth Smith, who hit the game-tying single.

You now what I like is that we finally have a guy who can come out of the bull-pen and just blow, just blow it by hitters. Way to go Franklin!!!!
The Jason Giambi signing is really paying off.
Thought Hammel pitched very well tonight. Especially nice job pitching around that odd little defensive inning by Barmes. That was pretty weird and random.
Seth Smith is the best pure hitter on this team right now. Tomorrow’s lineup will be interesting because I don’t know how you can sit Smith and Cargo, even against a lefy like Doug Davis. Night off for Hawpe is my choice.
So glad Jason Giambi is a part of this baseball team. So glad A.J. Hinch pitched to him.
This game had two left guys proving what they can do for the team. Jason Giambi hitting again at the right moment and Franklin Morales throwing one BB far from a perfect inning. Good job.
I hope the Rockies would let you play this season in Venezuela.
Go Franklin, Go ROCKIES!!!
So if Mets closer Franklin Rodriguez is called K-Rod, does that mean Franklin Morales is K-Mor?
I agree the Giambi signing is paying off big time. Go ahead rbi’s in three games he’s clutch. Jim Tracy’s reminding me of Hurdle in 07 when every move he made paid off. Having Morales close is looking pretty good right now. We just need to keep winning games against teams that were supposed to and well be alright at the end of this 10 game homestand.
K-Mor, I like it.
Something is in Hawpe’s head it looks like, he is just really mis firing at the plate right now. The team sure could use his bat. I would guess Spilly is back out there tonight.
