Marquis, Giambi File for Free Agency

Right-handed pitcher Jason Marquis and first baseman Jason Giambi were among 79 big-league players to file for free agency on Thursday, the first day of a 15-day filing period.
During the 15-day period only the player’s previous team can negotiate with him, but as of Nov. 21 any team is eligible to sign a player who filed for free agency.

Good year to be John Lackey.
Wonder how well Matt will do
I don’t think he will do as well as the offer the Rockies made him. Dropped a ball in the play offs and didn’t hit well when it was only him.
My bet is he will sign for well under the 18 mill the rockies offered him and he and his agent didn’t even respond.

Marquis, holliday, and lackey will all be mets next year and all be making a crap load
…And the Mets will still suck.
Good luck to both players. It’s fairly apparent that the Mets will be Marquis’ team of choice, and I’d be surprised if he doesn’t land there. As far as Giambi goes, it’s clear he’s going back to the AL – and preferably to a contender. With how much he may cost, it’s hard to speculate where he will end up. I’m guessing he’ll land with either Texas, Seattle, Minnesota, or possibly the White Sox. That’s me just guessing, but those four teams would probably seem to be the most appealing for Giambi.
I don’t mean anything by it, but I counted 13 players on this list that have played for the Rockies in the past. Am I right?
Is Marquis a type a or b free agent? will the rox get compensation when someone signs him?
Is there anyone on this list who the Rockies would want to sign, and oould sign for an amount that fits within their budget constraints, that is a righthanded hitting backup first baseman and/or third baseman?
I think Tulo and a few other Rockies should sit down and have a heart to heart with Holliday and see where his head’s at….without Boras around. Then if the Rockies’ management can get over their scorned lover feelings, make a similar offer as they did before, maybe a touch higher to sweeten the pot. I really think getting his big bat back in the line-up can be the step up the team needs.
Would the Rox have any interest in Troy Glaus for their backup 3B/1B? He would fit the power RH bat they would need. Question is if he’s willing to be a backup at this stage of his career and would he want too much.
Would Mike Cameron fit into their budget?
While it would be great to get Holliday back in Colorado there is nearly a 0% chance that will happen. Quite simply the Rockies cannot and will not meet his financial worth. Holliday is going to take the deal that gives him the most guaranteed money plain and simple. That money will not come from Colorado. Tulo and the rest of hte Rockies can have all the “heart to heart” talks with Holliday all they want. It won’t matter because the money just won’t be there.
The Rockies made out pretty well in the Holliday deal getting Gonzalez and Street in return has been a net plus for them. Carlos Gonazalez looks like he will only get better next year.
I don’t think signing Holliday actually makes much baseball sense to the Rockies at this stage, anyway. Not unless they were to successfully pull off a Brad Hawpe trade first.
OF isn’t the Rockies’ weak spot at this point. If anything, it’s a position of relative strength. A power hitting RH infield bat to balance the lineup (e.g., what we wish Atkins were still capable of) is probably more important.
Glaus could certainly be worth a looksee, but can he still actually play the field at all at this point in his career? How much would it take to sign Felipe Lopez?
I like Orlando Hudson or Placido Polanco at 2nd base (not high on Barmes anymore). We could look at Blalock or Crede at third, trade Atkins and Stewart for some front line starters and better bullpen. None of this will happen, don’t know if it should. I’m just not happy with Barmes, and Stewart strikes out way too much for my liking, but his glove, oh my his glove!!
Shane, I realize the chances of Holliday are nil, but it’s the off season now officially and we have to have something to talk about no matter how hair-brained it may be!
Holliday is under Boras’ spell.
There is no way that holliday signs with the Rockies and the Rockies would rather put Eric Young JR at second base before they sign someone to jam up another spot on there roster just like their outfield in which there might be a subtraction or two but no addition without a signifacant trade
