Marquis, Beimel, Torrealba Type B Free Agents

The Rockies hope to work out a deal to re-sign right-handed reliever Rafael Betancourt. If they don’t, however, they could receive two draft choices as compensation.
The Rockies have an option on Betancourt’s $5.4 million option for 2010 but would like to work out a two-year deal to replace the option.
Betancourt is among the Type A free agents in the annual Elias Ratings that were announced Monday. Left-handed pitcher Joe Beimel, right-handed pitcher Jason Marquis and catcher Yorvit Torrealba are Type B free agents, which could provide the Rockies one draft choice of compensation.
If a free agent either signs prior to the Dec. 7 deadline for offering arbitration or if the player’s former team offers arbitration, a team that signs of a Type A free agent loses its first-round draft choice if the signing team had one of the 15 best records in baseball last year or a second-round draft choice if the team had one of the 15 worst records in baseball last year. The team that loses the player also receives a bonus pick between the first and second round.
A team losing a Type B free agent receives a bonus pick between the first and second round.

Tracy, thanks as alwsys for keeping the fans up to date! You do get time off right? You have earned it plus.
One question though – last year being a Type A FA was the death nail for players outside the elite catergory. Would that not give them the leverage with Beitencourt? If he goes onteh open market no one is going to give up 2 picks for a set-up man, especially one who one season ago looked lost (the old, one season on, one season off we see we with so many relivers). Will this perhaps open up things for him to sign a 2 year deal?
Bummer that Marquis was only a B. Thought maybe the wins and All Star might have pushed him into A. I mean, Darren Oliver is an A but Marquis is a B? As was said elsewhere, this whole system needs re-working.
Also, what is it that has the Rockies so turned off by Beimel? Was it performance? Price? Clubhouse? The Rockies seem like they are still set-up for another run and going without a serious and proven lefty seems like a bad idea, unless they are seriously budget conscious and they intend to leave Morales in the pen for the long-term (still not sure that is his highest value, but O’Dowd and Tracy are the right guys to make that call.
Thanks for the kind words.
Hey, when you don’t have a job you have all kinds of time off. LOL.
Marquis as a type A? If only he hadn’t suffered another late-season melt down, it would’ve happened. Marquis was on track for a career year, heading into the all star break with under 3.5 ERA… he finished over 4. That’s a short time to do so much damage to yourself. And, when your manager decides that you aren’t fit to start in the playoffs, the chances of you being a type A free agent go down the drain.
Betancourt was spot on for a type A. There’s not a whole lot better out there in terms of pure 8th inning guys – which he is. The Rockies should be happy that Torrealba is a type B free agent, where previously a lot of scouting reports have him as a platoon catcher at best. I personally hope Ianetta can rebound, he’s got a good presence behind that plate.
Doesn’t it make sense now for the Rockies to wait and see if Betancourt gets picked up and then sign him at the end of the winter if he doesn’t? I mean, I’m a huge fan, but I can’t think of more than a handful of relievers worth more than 2 high draft picks, and he ain’t one of them.
Actually, I think it’s a good time for the Rockies to just leave the 7 million dollar 2-year offer they made to Betancourt on the table for now. I’d bet he’ll end up taking it rather than risk nobody picking him because of the Type A tag. If someone does pick him up, awesome, the Rockies just got 2 draft picks for a relief pitcher. If he takes the offer, then he will provide for very nice bullpen depth at a good price in my opinion anyway. Ask Juan Cruz how that Type A tag works out for relief pitchers.
Yeah, so their worst-case scenario is getting him at below-market value since everyone else has to sacrifice draft picks. His getting Type A status ends up really hurting him, I think, since the Rockies could sit back and wait for nobody to make him an offer before they offer him even less than they currently are.
i thought I read somewhere that type Bs won’t provide a draft pick this year.
