McCoy Claimed By Blue Jays

Infielder Mike McCoy, who appeared briefly with the Rockies in September after spending the season at Triple-A Colorado Springs, was claimed off waivers Monday by the Blue Jays.

McCoy, 28, is playing winter ball in Mexico for Culiacan where he has gone 25-for-72 (.347) in 18 games with 21 runs scored, eight stolen bases, two homers and four RBI.

He joined the Rockies organization July 19, 2008, in a trade that sent veteran infielder Juan Castro from the Sky Sox to Baltimore. At the time, McCoy was playing for the Orioles’ Triple-A Norfolk affiliate. The Rockies were pleasantly surprised to discover McCoy was a heady, instinctive player and a versatile infielder, who added organizational depth. They discussed promoting McCoy at various times during the 2009 season and might have done so before September had they been able to trade slumping third baseman Garrett Atkins.

Instead, McCoy spent the entire season with the Sky Sox before getting to the majors for the first time in September to cap off his eighth professional season. In 12 games with the Rockies, McCoy went hitless in five at-bats. At Colorado Springs, McCoy hit .307 with a .405 on-base percentage in 132 games with two homers, 52 RBI, 102 runs scored and 40 stolen bases in 46 attempts. He finished third in the Pacific Coast League in runs scored and fourth in on-base percentage and stolen bases.

This is the problem with a successful organization like the Rockies, who have built well from within. To protect their young on the 40-man roster, Mother Rockie has to lose a few overage guys like McCoy to the likes of the Jays. There’s a good chance McCoy could catch on as a solid utility player. I hope he does. To me this actually reflects well on the Rockies system (even if McCoy wasn’t truly home-grown). Watch for more guys like McCoy to exit in various methods like Rule 5 and waivers. Works both ways too. The Rox might find a gem somewhere out there. You never know. Every team is after the same thing.

    Agreed, Curt.

McCoy does have potential to be similar to a Jeff Baker type of player in the baseball. Probably not an everyday guy, but he can fill some needs when it comes down to it.

its a shame though that the rockies can’t trade the McCoys or Koshanskys before they leave for nothin.

McCoy doesn’t have Baker’s power, Baker doesn’t have McCoy’s baserunning.

It’s a shame to lose him but if he had the potential to be more than just another utility guy they’d have kept him on the 40-man (or they would have received value in return via trade). The Rockies have been a deep in recent years so this should be the type of player with which O’Dowd keeps the team well-supplied.

The good news is that reserve rule at least means McCoy will get a chance with someone. Scutaro’s expected to sign elsewhere as a FA, so an infield spot opened on Toronto’s roster.

Would have been nice to keep him around, but hopefully the infield stays healthy enough that he is never talked about again from the Rockies perspective.
