Rockies pass on Rule V draft

The Colorado Rockies had no role in the Thursday’s Rule V draft, neither selecting nor losing any prospects. Minor league closers Andrew Johnston (3.69 ERA and 31 saves at Double-A Tulsa) and Craig Baker (2.30 ERA and 33 saves at Single-A Modesto) were left off the Rockies’ 40-man roster and exposed in the draft but went unselected.

Last year the Rockies lost infielder Everth Cabrera and reliever David Patton in the draft. The team has had only rare successes drafting players. Luis Gonzalez, selected in 2003 from the Cleveland Indians, survived as a utility player with the Rockies for three seasons. Reliever Marcos Carvajal, selected by the Brewers in 2004 and sold to the Rockies, had one solid year with the Rockies before being traded to the Seattle Mariners for Yorvit Torrealba.

Time to add my two cents…I stop by just about every day. Thanks very much for reportage, Steve, Tracy and Jack. Down here in Rays country (really Bucs country), you have to work harder to be a Rockies fan.

I’m glad that we didn’t lose anyone in the Rule V draft.

With the signing of Crosby and Feliz by other teams today the number of available right handed third basemen/first basemen is reducing. Hopefully we’ll still be able to get a quality backup.

hey im kinda surprised that no one snagged baker, whats up with that?

No one thought Baker was worth carrying on the active roster for a year. Since he hasn’t pitched above A ball and is likely not ready to contribute at the ML level, a team would have to see a lot of potential in him to make that worthwhile.

ah right. i forgot they’d have to carry him on active roster all year.
