Street says shoulder is “a lot better”

TUCSON _ Closer Huston Street, who is dealing with inflammation in his right shoulder, came to the clubhouse Wednesday expecting to again play catch. Instead, trainer Keith Dugger told Street to use the day as “a full recovery day.”

Street played catch on Monday and Tuesday at 90 feet. He said the plan Thursday is to long-toss at 120 feet and then throw on flat ground from approximately 60 feet, 6 inches distance. As to the condition of his shoulder, Street said, “It feels like it’s coming around. Today it feels more back to normal.”

Street said he’s still on course to get 10-12 appearances in Cactus League games, which would be in keeping with past springs and have him ready for the beginning of the regular season.

In other injury news, pitcher Juan Nicasio played catch and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Thursday. Nicasio tore the nail on the middle finger of his right hand in Monday’s intrasquad game. That happened on his final pitch of a perfect first inning and contributed to a debacle in the second when he threw four of 19 pitches for strikes, issuing three walks and a single before being taken out of the game.

Whew….that’s good news. I hope this is “normal” for pitchers in early spring, as he and Dugger said earlier. I love Huston, but the injury bug history has to concern somewhat.

This injury makes me uncomfortable. Normally I blow off spring training injuries, but anytime we are talking about a pitcher and a shoulder or elbow it is concerning. Street has some injury history, so it has to be a little bit bothersome…I am hoping that I am wrong and it is normal soreness.

I heard on the news last night that this is a regular occurrence for Street. Same thing happened last spring. I think he will be fine.
