Rockies top pitching prospects off to good starts
Colorado Rockies pitching prospects Jhoulys Chacin and Christian Friedrich both pitched solid games in their season debuts Thursday.
Chacin, starting for the Triple-A Colorado Springs Sky Sox on the road in Tacoma, pitched five scoreless innings and allowed one hit and one walk while striking out six. He threw 83 pitches and took the win as the Sky Sox shut out the Rainiers 2-0.
Edgmer Escalona, Matt Reynolds, Andrew Johnston and Juan Rincon each pitched a scoreless inning for the Sky Sox in relief of Chacin.
Friedrich, starting for the Double-A Tulsa Drillers, pitched six innings and allowed four hits and a walk while striking out five in a 7-0 loss against Corpus Christi.

Just the first minor league game of the 2010 season but the starting pitchers at the top three levels were awesome – Chacin at AAA, Friedrich at AA, and Nicasio at A-Modesto.
Nicasio: 5 2/3 innings, 5 hits, 1 BB and 5 Ks. Also worth noting, 2009 draft picks Rex Brothers pitched a scoreless inning and Tim Wheeler homered in that game for Modesto.
Steve,
Can you give me an update on where Casey Weathers and Greg Reyolds are in their rehab processes? When do you see them pitching again and where will they be sent? I’d imagine that Reynolds will go the AAA, but where will Weathers go? Thanks for the updates!
Eric,
Here are status updates courtesy Jack Etkin:
Reynolds is in extended spring training and should return to Colorado Springs when he is ready. Not sure when that will be.
Weathers is also in extended. Jack says he has had a long, uneven road coming back from Tommy John surgery. He’s throwing all fastballs in bullpen sessions but figures to be in extended for at least a month. Not sure where he will go when he’s healthy. My bet would be he will start on in the low minors on a rehab and work his way to Double-A where we would stay for awhile. The Rockies probably wouldn’t expose him to Colorado Springs and what can sometimes be long innings until he’s had a chance to get settled again.
