Rockies add Beimel, option Rogers to Triple-A

By Steve Foster

The Colorado Rockies added left-handed reliever Joe Beimel to their major-league roster Friday and optioned Esmil Rogers to Triple-A Colorado Springs. To make room on the 40-man roster for Beimel, the Rockies moved injured reliever Taylor Buchholz to the 60-day disabled list.

Beimel joined the Rockies on a minor-league contract near the end of spring training. He was in competition for the final bullpen spot going into the last weekend, but the Rockies preferred a long reliever to start the season. When an injury to Jeff Francis pushed Greg Smith to the starting rotation, the team opted to go with Rogers to start the season.

In two appearances at Colorado Springs, Beimel pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out two.

Rogers, who had been expected to start the season in the Sky Sox rotation, made three relief appearances for the Rockies including two scoreless innings in Thursday’s series finale against the New York Mets. He compiled a 2.25 ERA in four innings with two walks and five strikeouts.
