Friedrich placed on Double-A Tulsa disabled list

Left-hander Christian Friedrich was placed on the Double-A Tulsa disabled list with soreness in his left elbow. One of the top pitching prospects in the Colorado Rockies system, Friedrich was scheduled to start Sunday, but Ching-Lung Lo, who has been working in long relief, stepped in and gave up one run in three innings in what became a 4-3 win in 11 innings against Springfield.

Friedrich is 0-1 with a 2.81 ERA in three starts for the Drillers, who are 6-10, and has allowed 15 hits in 16 innings with four walks and 16 strikeouts. The Rockies took him 25th overall in the 2008 draft out of Eastern Kentucky.

This isn’t the first time Friedrich has had elbow issues in his professional career. Tendinitis in his left elbow sidelined Friedrich last season for a month after he was promoted from low Class A Asheville to high Class A Modesto. He made his Modesto debut May 30. After making his third start June 10, Friedrich didn’t pitch again for the Nuts until July 13.

This injury is real bummer, as Christian was pitching well at AA Tulsa.

Does it seem to anyone else that the Rockies are completely snake bit when it comes to the health of their high prospect pitchers drafted in the first round – G Reynolds, C Weathers, and now C Friedrich? And I really hope that T Matzek doesn’t continue this ugly trend!

Still that’s a lot of pitching capital laying around on the DL shelve!
