Deduno on Colorado Springs DL

Colorado Rockies pitching prospect Samuel Deduno has been placed on the disabled list at Triple-A Colorado Springs with elbow soreness, meaning the Sky Sox have lost three-fifths of their rotation.

Jhoulys Chacin has been recalled by the Rockies and will start Sunday in San Francisco. Esmil Rogers is expected to start there Saturday. Chacin and Rogers are taking the places of Jorge De La Rosa and Jason Hammel, both of whom are on the disabled list.

Deduno is 2-1 with a 3.66 ERA in four starts for Colorado Springs. He has shown the same hard-to-hit stuff _ opponents are batting .194 against him _ along with the same lack of command _ 13 walks and 18 strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings _ that have been his pattern. Sky Sox pitching coach Doug Linton has been working with Deduno to stay behind his fastball, rather than cutting it or getting inside the ball, to improve his command.

Deduno has made some progress in that area, but he was placed on the disabled list (which is seven days in the minors) retroactive to Tuesday after pitching five innings Monday at Reno.

The loss of Chacin, Rogers and Deduno leaves the Sky Sox with a rotation of Chaz Roe, Kurt Birkins, Alan Johnson and Tim Redding. Another starter will have to be found, most likely from outside the organization.

Is Braden Looper still unsigned? This may be the time to pull the trigger and get some backup lined up so we can all sleep well.
