Frazier, Weathers make returns with Tri-City

Two promising Colorado Rockies pitching prospects began their comebacks from Tommy John surgery Friday with the short-season Class A Tri-City Dust Devils.

Parker Frazier, an eighth-round pick of the Rockies in 2007 who had the surgery late last season, started the Dust Devils’ 2010 opener and pitched five shutout innings. He allowed just one hit, no walks and struck out six.

Casey Weathers, the Rockies’ first-round pick in 2007 also returning from Tommy John surgery, pitched a scoreless but interesting eighth inning. He struck out the first two hitters he faced, but the second reached base on a passed ball. After allowing a one-out double to put runners at second and third, Weathers struck out the final two batters to record four strikeouts in his one inning of work.

Frazier had an exceptionally quick recovery, having undergone Tommy John surgery Sept. 22. Weathers wasn’t nearly as fortunate, enduring multiple setbacks after his Tommy John surgery on Oct. 31, 2008.
