Left rib contusion could put Fowler on disabled list

Center fielder Dexter Fowler, who suffered a bruised left hip and left ribs Sunday, could end up on the disabled list, pending the result of tests Monday.

Fowler was injured in the ninth inning Sunday when he banged into the area just above the padded portion of the wall in right-center to turn Alfonso Soriano’s deep drive into a sacrifice fly and the final run of a three-run ninth in the Colorado Rockies 8-7 win over the Chicago Cubs.

Trainer Keith Dugger said Dr. Thomas Noonan, the Rockies medical director, evaluated Fowler, who had the wind knocked out of him, and said Fowler would be sent “for precautionary X-rays and possibly an MRI tomorrow.”

It wouldn’t take cracked ribs for Fowler to end up on the disabled list. Dugger said, “If it comes back and shows fluid and a good-sized contusion, he’s a DL candidate, for sure.”

Huston Street, pitching in a non-save situation, was on the mound in the ninth and showed his emotions when he hollered out when Fowler caught the ball and held on after colliding with the wall.

“He took one for team and hopefully he’s going to be OK, because he’s been hot for us lately,” said Street, who gave up two walks and a triple before Soriano’s eventful sacrifice fly. “The ball even went further than I thought, because off the bat, he was putting his hand up. But, goodness, the ball went as far as it did and when I went and watched it on replay, I can’t believe he made the catch.

“”I hope he can come back. I hope he’s not as sore. I hope the X-ray shows up negative, because the way he’s been playing, the way he’s been playing this series, we need him at the top of the lineup.”

Fowler was mired in a 3-for-43 slump, which he put behind him by going 10-for-20 in the past four games with two doubles, one homer, five RBI and six runs scored.

Thanks for sacrificing your body for the team Dexter. Great play.

Man I hope he comes back quickly. I just ran through his numbers real quick, the Rocks are 14-3 in games Fowler has had multiple hits. He’s a huge offensive catalyst for this team when he’s on.

Yes,Brett, that stat was also quoted by FSN guys.If DL’d,I’m lobbying for Matt Miller to geta shot.Has hit over .325 last 3 years, and at least could be bat off the bench,if his defense is suspect.uNless todd is ready, then no contest, and solves a problem that was pending.

Ok, so how many times has this been that Dex has beat himself up (literally!) for the team?? What a guy, what a play. Get well soon Dex!

Dexter Fowler has been much maligned for his hitting this season. He is up an down. However, he has made some fantastic plays for the Rox. I would love to see a highlight video of his plays. He saved the game yesterday, he made 2 great catches in Ubaldo’s no-hitter, and he has had several others. He covers center field (especially one as big as Coors Field) with ease and grace. Hurry back, Dexter.

Latest speculation on DP is Fowler goes to DL. Helton comes back after having a decent stint in Casper. Well that could take care of any roster decisions for a couple weeks then.

I hope it works out that way Steve. I live in Casper and watched Helton play yesterday for five innings before my 3 year old melted down and I had to leave. He went 2 for 3 when I saw him. He put good wood on the ball all three times I saw him. First time up he just simply hit it right to the outfielder, and was out. The next two times up he made solid contact and had a couple rbi’s. It was fun to watch him up close and personal at the sub 4,000 capacity stadium up here in Casper. It has been fun for little ‘ol Casper to get the best Rockie of all time in town, and play some baseball. I hope Helton’s back holds up for him the rest of the year at least.
