Rockies swap Chacin, Cook in upcoming starts
The Colorado Rockies were expected to activate Aaron Cook for a Thursday start at home against the Philadelphia Phillies but will instead start Jhoulys Chacin on normal rest and push Cook back to Friday against the San Diego Padres.
Cook has been bettered in two starts against the Phillies this season — 0-1, 6.97 ERA and 17 hits in 10 1/3 innings — and has struggled against them throughout his career, going 1-6 with a 6.05 ERA in 11 appearances. He has had better luck in his career in San Diego’s Petco Park, where he is 6-1 with a 2.15 ERA in 10 career starts.
The Phillies, meanwhile, have had only a brief look at Chacin when the right-hander pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief in Philadelphia in July.

Great call by the Rox! This game is so important and you want the guy that has been pitching great on the hill. Nothing against Cook, but with the way Chacin has been pitching he needs to start that game.
Hmmm. Cookies had a great outing earlier this year vs Phili and his sinker if it is working is great for Coors. I trust Tracy and Apodoca know best, and Cameo, you are right, Chacin is pretty much on fire right now. I just thought it would be good to have Aaron fly from Tulso to CO and wait, and I am guessing Chacin is already in SF. Anyways, lets see how it works out. If we can find a way to win both starts it could be big!
As Tracy Ringolsby said, “Cook 6-1, 2.15 lifetime Petco Park. Cook 1-6, 6.05 lifetime against Phillies. Case closed”.
It made no sense to move Cook into that spot when I first heard it and I’m glad they changed it. Chacin has been lights out in his last two starts.
And that’s it for me, lights out tonight.
Doctor Christopher, the rockies will most likely fly Chacin to Denver to wait while the rest of the team plays that late game on Wednesday. This is usually the protocol when there is not an afternoon game on getaway day.
Thanks Nate and Bill. I didn’t know that numbers on Cook vs Phils. Yikes. I remember the earlier game when he outpitched Halladay, but that may have been an aberation. In this light, pitching Chacin on his normal day makes a ton of sense. Bill, I was wondering if they would do that but I was not sure what day was his bullpen throwing day, which I assumed they want done in front of the big league coaches. But maybe at this point does not matter.
